Speakers Bureau Keynote Suggestions

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Speakers Bureau is now taking suggestions for the keynote speaker in the fall. In the past they’ve brought David Sedaris, Gideon Yago, Christopher Buckley, and Spike Lee. If you have any suggestions email the Speakers Bureau Chair Aviva Ariel.

David Sedaris Tonight

Monday, March 30th, 2009

The Speakers Bureau is proud to present David Sedaris tonight in Gannett Auditorium. Victors from last week’s ticket fracas should know that Gannett’s doors open at 7:30 but that only foolish people would think of showing up that late. Gannett fits something like 160 people and about 180 tickets were sold for the event meaning a few lazy ticket holders will find themselves standing in the back, legs silently cramping as Sedaris entertains a room full of seated fans. Folks who weren’t lucky/dedicated enough to snag a ticket last Monday should know that simulcasts will be broadcast in Emerson and Davis Auditoriums, as well as the Spa. The 8pm reading will be followed by a short Q&A and book signing; the Q&A will be open only to ticket holders but the book signing, held in Gannett Lobby, is free and open to the public.

And finally here are some tips to survive the night:

    • Students who find themselves without a sacred book to be hastily penned by Sedaris during the book signing should look no further than the SkidShop, which will be posted up outside Gannett looking to take your money.
    • Sedaris has a piece in last week’s New Yorker which I suggest checking out so you can make impressive small talk to the hot girl from English while waiting in line.
    • Gannett is known to be chilly, perhaps bring your Snuggie
    • Hydration is key but “making a deposit” in the middle of a book reading is disruptive and alerts everyone to your weak bladder and weaker will. Skip your requisite dinnertime cranberry juice and save yourself the embarrassment.
    • Be prepared to wait in line. If Monday’s ticket line was any indication people love Sedaris and the wait to get your book signed will probably be worse.
    • Turn off your cellphone Asshole.
    • Get there early (but not before me)–even if you have a ticket.

Ticket Scamble *UPDATE*

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Remember awhile back we mentioned David Sedaris is coming to campus thanks to the Speakers Bureau? I’m sure you do. Anyhoo this is just a reminder that tickets go on sale tomorrow in Case Center at 10am. Because Sedaris is such a wonderful and popular speaker I expect those puppies to sell like proverbial hot cakes so I recommend setting your alarms. Tickets are a recession appropriate 5 dollars and are limited to one per Skidmore ID.

I didn’t really pay attention in Economics but I assume if you missed out on tickets some sort of nasty bartering market will emerge, or you could just watch the free simulcasts in Davis and Emerson or the Spa.

Check the event out on TheFacebook for more information

*UPDATE*
A little Facebook message from the fine folks at the Speakers Bureau alerted us to two little facts.

  1. More tickets will be sold tomorrow than actual seats in Gannett, meaning that a ticket only guarantees admission to the auditorium not a physical seat. Complaining about having to stand up for the reading will not be tolerated, get there when the doors open if you want to rest your legs.
  2. The purchase limit is set at 5 tickets per student meaning you cannot show up tomorrow at 10am with 20 Skidmore IDs expecting to get 20 tickets. 5 only homeboy. 5 only.

Sedaris to Lecture March 30th

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Erin Anderson ’09, the Chair of the Speakers Bureau, wrote in to give us some details on the Sedaris talk. Sedaris will be speaking on campus March 30th at 8pm in Gannett. Tickets for the event will be sold in Case on Monday March 23rd from 10am-4pm, or until they sell out. Tickets cost 5 dollars for students, 8 for faculty/staff and are limited to one ticket per Skidmore ID.

Because of Sedaris’ popularity, and the limited space in Gannett, the talk will be broadcast for students and faculty not lucky enough to snag a ticket live in Davis and Emerson Auditoriums. Saratoga residents or those without SKidmore ID’s can watch a simulcast in the Spa. Following the talk Sedaris will host a book signing which will be open to the public.

David Sedaris: Speakers Bureau Keynote

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Rumor has it that David Sedaris will be on campus the evening of March 30th. While there is no mention of Sedaris on the Skidmore website or anywhere else for that matter The Skidmore Speakers Bureau has quietly scheduled their yet-to-be-announced keynote address for the very night Sedaris is rumored to come.

*UPDATE* It is true. Sedaris will be speaking on campus March 30th and giving a book signing. YIPEE!!!!!

Sedaris, whose sardonic style has made him a regular funny-man on NPR and in The New Yorker, would be a incredible speaker and a true treat. Hopefully the rumor is true.
