Students Push Homelessness Awareness

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Students in “Human Behavior and the Social Environment” teamed with Shelters of Saratoga for several activities last month as part of the largely ignored National Homelessness Awareness Week Nov. 14-19.

In addition to an on campus candlelight vigil, a screening of Carts of Darkness and a food drive to benefit the shelter, students did some chalk stenciling around downtown to raise awareness of Shelters of Saratoga’s mission and to subtly remind everyone that for a lot of people Saratoga doesn’t look like Broadway, and not everyone is eating Putnam Market sandwiches for lunch.

In line with a national trend homelessness in Saratoga has increased over the past year. “At least 75 people without shelter were recorded in a survey earlier this year, with 89 families (totaling 196 individuals) living in emergency housing. The family count one year ago was 36. As the only shelter in Warren, Washington, and Saratoga counties, Shelters of Saratoga provides short-term housing, food and clothing, and access to agencies that can help with job placement and permanent housing.”  <via skidmore.edu>
