The White House often holds press conferences for, shall we say, icky decisions and loaded topics late on Friday afternoons. The idea is that people are heading out for the weekend, the news media is chillaxing, and therefore you might get lucky and have the whole thing fly under the radar, at least until Monday.

That’s not to say that this email from the SGA President was meant to sneak past you, but we are heading into spring break and everything, so… My point is, don’t not read it. The quick summary, for those of you sunbathing or whatever: Jono and Rohini stand by their event and clarify that SkidNews and SGA are not collaborating on a panel.

Frankly, I was expecting more of a response – it’s been a week since ‘Live and Let Dialogue, Part I’.

I’m still waiting for a good explanation of what a dialogue should actually be, because I keep hearing from IGR kids that “Interrupting Silence”, whatever the SGA members are saying, was not a dialogue. If there are factual corrections to be made that would cripple Brendan’s argument that dialogues are poorly-run pity parties, it would be best to make them sooner than later. Because it seems like he is dismissing ‘A’ and everyone else is defending ‘B’.

Let’s get some definitions established for those of us that aren’t enlightened as to what all these talking sessions are supposed to do and how they differ. Maybe then we can get Brendan the Debater, Jono & Rohini the Bureaucrats, and IGR Folk the Indignant to see how dialogue, debate, discussion and other proprietary modes of talking in groups can coexist to help us coexist.

I have to stress that I am not defending the substance of the EIC’s op-ed articles, but rather encouraging the pro-dialoguers to beat him at his own game: construct a killer argument.

Reproduced here, for the sake of continuity online, is the email:

Dear All,

Skidmore is our community. We call Skidmore home for seven months every year, and share our house with classmates, peers, and friends. While we come from over 40 different countries, we are all forever connected because of Skidmore. With active interaction with our 90 clubs, 19 varsity sports teams, and 248 full-time professors, we certainly care about Skidmore. When somebody in our community, or our house, feels uncomfortable, silenced or disrespected, we want to know why and how we can help.

In this context, we clearly see the value of dialogue. Dialogue is different from discussion, debate, or argument; the purpose of dialogue lies in understanding the ideas, opinions, and experiences of others. At Interrupting Silence, a dialogue sponsored by Rohini and I, over 60 students attended to hear each other, feel each other, and most of all, and understand each other. Despite its naysayers,Interrupting Silence, and its subsequent discussions, serve as a much needed wake-up call: we will never get to a place where we all have the same perspectives and ideas, nor would we want to, but we need to respect each other, and hear each other. Skidmore is not perfect. As engaged members of the Skidmore community, it is our responsibility to continue communicating.

In Brendan James Brusts’ Live and Let Dialogue, Part II, the article concluded by stating that Skidnews is collaborating with SGA for a panel- this is simply not true.

We will, however, have another dialogue. For those of you who didn’t attend Interrupting Silence, don’t let the words of somebody else serve as your experience this time; attend yourself.

Looking forward,

Jono & Rohini

For the record, if you write an op-ed and the Editor in Chief ‘refuses to run it’, SU.com will be happy to publish it.

The current VP for Diversity Affairs will be going abroad next semester, presumably to get exposure to more diversity, and the SGA is going like, “whaaat! we need somebody do to that stuff!” So there is an election happening.

This sort of election is usually run in the spring semester, but the SGA was all like, “the elected candidate would probably appreciate having time to prepare for this important role, so let’s vote him/her/zim in this semester.”

FYI: As per SGA policy, only senators (past or current) may run for this position (Executive Committee members require senate experience – email rnazaret@skidmore.edu with Q’s).

So, if you want to vote for someone who can address the diverse array of diversity affairs on campus, come to Speech Night on Wednesday, Dec. 7th at 7:30 and check it out. And since you’re there, stick around for the SkidShop’s incredibly awesome Fashion Show, which starts at 8:00 (more on that later). Voting will be on Thursday, Dec. 8th.

Today, the refreshingly efficient Junior Class President, Matt Walsh, sent an email informing students of the School’s decision to renovate the library. Justifiably, Walsh and SGA seem a little upset that this is the first the student body has been informed of arguably the biggest administrative construction initiative since Zankel:

My response to that was – “this is happening now?” and “why didn’t I know about this?” Many students I have since spoke to were also unaware of this coming to fruition.

In any event, here’s the tentative plan the IT/library heads put forward at last night’s Senate meeting:

250+ more seats

10+ more study rooms (some with flat screen TVs)

A system to reserve study rooms (no definite plans yet)

Lots more group tables

More computer stations

More individual study rooms

Better access to power outlets

Media viewing room (think small scale movie theater)

A courtyard outside the library (you can see construction now)

Moving GIS lab to library and expanding

Moving Media Services to library

Nearly doubling the amount of Media Services space

Expansion of Writing Center

Lots and lots of technology

Hopefully done by the end of THIS summer

Construction is from 7am to 3pm daily

Most of these ideas are great, with more seats, computers, and a study room reservation system standing out among them. Regardless, the fact remains that construction has already begun and we’re only hearing about it now. Also, it would be nice to know how much this is all going to cost, and what the noise and dust will be like in the coming months.

To be honest, the way the Administration’s gone about this seems a little heavy-handed, but I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt if they actually follow through on their promise of “lots and lots of technology.” Not really sure what to make of that, but everybody loves technology, right? Maybe they’re getting one of those amazing touchscreens from Minority Report! Perhaps an underground particle accelerator lies in our library’s bright future! Your guess is as good as mine, but the possibilities are endless.

Shit gets even more intense at the college level: our politically-minded peers are, at this very moment, practicing the skills that will get them Capitol Hill internships, consulting jobs, and maybe even the shot at public office.
SGA aka Student Government Association aka Super Good Amigos aka Succulent Green Apples is perpetuating the cycle of democracy by hosting elections to fill next year’s positions. Usually this shit is soooo boring (politics, right?) but this round of ballot punching happens to be full of exciting contested elections. Huzzah!

Speech Night is Wednesday, April 6th at 6pm in the Spa so if you want to be an informed and responsible voter you should probably attend that (there will also be free pizza). You can also browse this wonderful facebook album loaded with sexy pictures and exciting information about the candidates.

If you’re popular and/or pretty you probably have a lot of facebook friends, which means that all of your friends have probably already invited you to an infuriating amount of facebook events made to support the various candidates, which WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THAT DUDE? Facebook is for looking at pictures of cute girls from high school, not ‘getting out the vote’ or whatever. Leave me alone.

Voting is all day Thursday online and at the SGA offices in Case Center and if you’re a real American you’ll wait until then to decide who you support.

(fbook)

If I had the time I would make the obligatory joke about the importance of democratic participation and maybe also something about the rise of democracy in North Africa here, but I’m kind of in a rush and can’t be bothered. Feel free to make your own in the comments.

Click here to vote online, or visit the SGA offices in Case Center.
