Musical Events Galore TODAY

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Pretend this still image is the .gif.

By Brandon Dyer ’15

Okay, we all know that this Saturday is the illustrious Fun Day (did I actually use that word in the proper context?  Ah, who gives a fuck?) and hopefully you know that the Tang Party is tonight from 8 PM to midnight but were you aware that musical happenings will start not at 8 on Friday, but at noon?  Allow me to elaborate.

From 12-3 on Case Green Lively Lucy’s will be holding the annual Skidmore Folk Fest, featuring the talents of Jeffrey Halvorsen, Melissa Chilinski, Burning Man, Callison Stratton, Skinny White Folk, and Matt Gaydar.  These guys are seasoned veterans of Falstaff’s and have soothed many a stressed-out soul with their beautiful melodies and harmonies.  Not gonna lie, I’ve probably watched this ten of fifteen times now.  It’s gonna be great. Turns out Skidmore Folk Fest is being postponed until finals week, but look forward to it then!

But wait – there’s more!  After that, also on Case Green from 3-6, will be the Geo Club’s annual Rock Concert (haha, get it? Rock? Geology), where there will be Pop Rocks, ice cream, and, of course, rock!  Starting the show will be a local band that has never played at Skidmore before, Speak of the Devil.  You may recognize the guitarist as that dude who works in the dining hall.  Rumor has it they’ll be giving out free EP’s…  Next up is Beardo, Skidmore’s resident jammers.  Need I say more?  And finally, closing out the Rock Concert will be Mugsy Boges.  Last week opening for Evolfo Doofeht, Mugsy Boges put on – I’ll say it – the best show I’ve ever been to.  These guys are the real deal.  There’s also going to be warm stuff to drink and geology-themed candy, so come out to Case Green.

There you have it.  Music all day, with a break for dinner before the Tang Party featuring Third Nature, Yo Soy Milk, and The Artifacts.  Prepare to get rocked, you hipsters.

Contra dancing! This Thursday at Falstaffs

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

By Brandon Dyer ’15

Before you ask, the steps are not up up down down left right left right B A.

Falstaff’s is frequently known as a home for Skidmore bands and raves, but this Thursday the folks at Lively Lucy’s are mixing it up a bit with some contra dancing.  Contra dancing is a partnered folk dance similar to square dancing, and… you know what? I’m just going to cut out the middleman and send you directly to the Wikipedia article I’m getting this from.  There will be a live band and caller, so this shit’s pretty authentic.  Newbies welcome and in fact encouraged to come.

Falstaff’s, this Thursday, 8 PM.  Be there or be square.

Lively Lucy’s Tonight: Yo Soy Milk, Los Elk, and Punch Drunk Monkeys

Thursday, February 9th, 2012
By Brandon Dyer ’15

Leave your pouting babies at home for this one.

Tonight starting at 8:45 @ Falstaff’s, Lively Lucy’s presents a night of rock and roll debauchery at Falstaff’s chock full of sweaty thongs and headbanging. Three homegrown Skidmore bands will be performing: Yo Soy Milk, Los Elk, and Punch Drunk Monkeys.

Yo Soy Milk is likely the loudest, most obnoxious punk act to grace Skidmore since, well, ever. Seriously, these guys are terrible.  Never before has Skidmore heard their patented brand of Nirvana-meets-Queens of the Stone Age-meets-The Replacements punk with a hint of emo self-loathing. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, this Thursday you can hear Yo Soy Milk’s first Skidmore performance.

If you missed Los Elk opening for Jesse Rubin at the Spa last Friday, you missed out on some seriously groovin’ dance rock from these boys.  With a classic indie rock sound combining raw power with technical proficiency that will make it impossible for you to not get down with your bad self on the dance floor, their second showing is not to be missed.

Last but certainly not least will be Punch Drunk Monkeys, Skidmore’s resident punk-funk gurus.  The oldest of these young bands, Punch Drunk Monkeys are veterans of the Skidmore rock scene, even performing at Fun Day last year.  If you know ‘em, you love ‘em, and if you don’t, you will.

Who knows, that cute girl in your philosophy class might even be there.

Lively Lucy’s Presents Dan Papson and Beardo

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Tomorrow night at Falstaff’s Dan Papson ’11 and Beardo will be playing some swell tunes.  No, I don’t know who or what Beardo is. I’m assuming the Beardo playing at Falstaff’s tomorrow is not this one, but if it is please, please let me know.
Music starts around 9.

Lively Lucy’s Presents: Bailiwick w/ Noah & Jake

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Bailiwick in harsh, fluorescent lighting

Hey, remember indie folk darlings Bailiwick? Yeah I know, they haven’t done shit in like four months. My theory is that they still think they can draw a crowd, even though they treat their adoring fans with disdain. No doubt due to their massive egos. It’s a fucking disease with these kids.

Anyway, this Thursday September 29th at Falstaff’s, Bailiwick will deign to make music for us once again. Along with Ned’s high school friend on bass and former Senator-at-Large candidate  Hand-Me-Downs member Steve Yell on drums, they’ll be playing brand new, unheard songs. Some band called Noah & Jake will be playing too, but I don’t know who they are so I can’t vouch for them. I’m sure they’re alright though.

Lively Lucy’s First Open Mic of the Year

Monday, September 5th, 2011

Students polishing their act for Simon Cowell's X Factor

Gosh, there sure is a lot that all you new people need to get caught up on. Lively Lucy’s is a student club that organizes all sorts of entertainment on Thursday nights, including but not limited to open mic nights, poetry readings, and concerts by both local and touring bands (not all of which are from Brooklyn). Like most clubs these days, they are probably recruiting – if you like this stuff, get connected.

The first open mic is this Thursday, 8:30 at Falstaffs. Bring a song, poem or story to share, or just come to watch. Performers should arrive early to sign up, and the winner gets to open for the concert next Thursday. In the words of Tony Horton, “We think of everything!”
