Camper, Lyle Divinsky, and Nat Osborn @ Spa

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

I don’t know

Tomorrow, Jewy heartthrobs Camper and Skidmore alums Lyle Divinsky and Nat Osborn will be playing in the Spa. Everyone knows and loves Camper, and these guys Lyle and Nat are cool if you’re into Dave Matthews and being white.

Go check them out before the 100 Days Dance.

Camper, Los Elk, and The Hilarys @ Putnam Den

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

I could look at this aesthetically appealing poster almost as long as I can stare into Stephen Yell‘s eyes. Which is forever.

It’s the last day of classes, so get ready to rage/slit your wrists as study week looms on the horizon.

Hopefully you’re in the former camp, because tomorrow night, beloved Skidmore minstrels Camper, Los Elk, and The Hilarys will be playing at Putnam Den. A portion of the proceeds will go to Sandy relief efforts, so you can feel good about yourself for paying $14 for two 40s at the bar and puking behind the Saratoga Springs Public Library as tears stream down your face and townies wandering over from Ice House laugh and throw solo cups full of Coors at you. Is this a true story? Maybe.

ALSO, admission gets you into the Pony Club event following the show.

Pulse: Final Show

Friday, December 7th, 2012

Pulse—Skidmore’s resident gang of miscellaneous pot-bangers—will be playing their final show of the semester tonight. I’m sure it’s going to be LOUD and you’ll be dancing in the aisles of Gannett like it’s closing night of Mamma Mia! at the Winter Garden Theatre. Check it out.

On another note, I feel like Pulse should be much more destructive, really hammer down that DIY punk aesthetic. FUCK WALL STREET, FUCK BLOOMBERG, FUCK THE NYPD, FUCK THE FCC.

SEC Presents: Le1f @ Falstaff’s

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

You probably know this already but on Friday night, rapper Le1f will be performing at Falstaff’s. Skidmore’s own bleepy-blooper Karate will be opening.

If you’ve never heard of Le1f before, you might know him as a beatmaker for Das Racist (he produced “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell,” for better or worse). In any event, he’s been getting a lot of attention recently, in part because he’s pretty good, but mostly because he’s gay. The Internet is completely flabbergasted by this man’s sexuality. It’s like, STOP THE PRESSES, THE GAYS ARE RAPPING!!!

Maybe he’ll show up at a Northwoods party afterwards. He went to Wesleyan and probably knows your friends there or something.

You can download his mxitape, Dark York, here. Also:

Beatlemore Skidmania Returns

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

The Beatles

This weekend, the dulcet, important tones of Beatles covers will once again ring forth from Zankel, as Beatlemore Skidmania returns. Which a cappella group will cover “Imagine?” Who will cover “Blackbird?” What about “If I Fell?” I am bursting in anticipation.

This year, there are going to be three shows in total: one on Friday and two on Saturday. Seats are either gone or going fast because of how important this event is, so grab them online or at the Zankel box office. I realize it’s a pain in the ass to schlep all the way over there during the day, but tickets simply cannot be sold in Case because this is more important than ANYTHING you ever have attended or ever will attend at Skidmore College.

Also, t-shirts and posters will be sold tomorrow in Case.

UPDATE: Apparently, the Saturday evening show will be simulcasted at bars in Boston and New York for any sad alums looking to relive their college years. Unfortunately, the New York location is the Village Pourhouse, which the $10 open bar only slightly makes up for.

Beardo, Bo Peep, and Trophy Wives @ Putnam Den

Saturday, November 10th, 2012

Tonight, Beardo, Bo Peep & the Funk Sheep, and Trophy Wives will be playing at Putnam Den for your dancing pleasures. Beardo and Bo Peep are about as fun as a barrel of monkeys, and though I’ve never heard Trophy Wives, apparently they’re pretty cool.

Cover is $3 if you’re over 21, $5 if you’re not. Tickets get you into the Pony Club event at Putnam Den afterwards. It’s 18+, ya creep.

The Julian Lage Group @ Zankel

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

Tomorrow night, acclaimed jazz/classical/everything-else quintet, the Julian Lage Group, will be performing in Zankel. Lage is a guitarist virtuoso whose music blends an inconceivable number of genres. In 1997, at the age of eight, he was the subject of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Jules at Eight. He graduated from Berklee College of Music and has been a member of the Stanford Jazz Workshop faculty since age 15. Check out an interview/performance he did at WNYC here.

Admission is free for students; $8 for adults; and $5 for faculty, seniors, retirees, and alumni. Tickets are available online or at the Zankel box office.

Friday November 2, 8pm @ Zankel

Camper & Bear Grass @ Putnam Den

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

Aesthetically unremarkable

Prepare your loins and dancing shoes, because Camper and area folkies Bear Grass will be playing a FREE show at Putnam Den. IT’S SO FREE.*

Everyone loves Camper and if you don’t you’re fucking dickhead, and the word is that they’re going to be playing some new songs. Also, if you’re the luckiest girl in the world and YOU DON’T COME ON TOO STRONG, maybe Stephen Yell will toss his drumsticks and heart at you.

*As long as you are over 21.

Drastic Measures Host Ugandan Children’s Choir

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Tomorrow night, the Drastic Measures are hosting a benefit concert with Ugandan children’s choir, The Chosen. The concert will raise money for Action for Empowerment (which has the confusing, inexplicable acronym AOET?), a charity supporting education and infrastructure in rural African villages.

The Drastic Measures will be singing with The Chosen, as well as separately, and jewelry will be sold after the concert.

I would write more about this but the Facebook is incredibly vague about everything.
