Each year members of the senior class close out their Skidmore careers with a variety of projects that reflect the culmination of their undergraduate education.  We’ve decided to give a shout out to the music students completing senior recitals in the majestic Arthur Zankel Music Center’s Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall.  Be sure to check them out and show support for Skidmore music.

Tonight at 7pm Skidmore Small Jazz Ensembles will be playing at Caffe Lena. The legendary music house writes:

Enjoy an evening of diverse jazz styles and inspiring talent as the jazz music students of Skidmore College take the stage with their guitars, brass, reeds, keyboards, drums and vocals. They never fail to put on truly engaging show of jazz standards and contemporary compositions. This is a great one to bring your aspiring young music student to!

Tickets are either free or five dollars at the door, it’s not entirely clear.

What better way to cap off your weekend than with some sweet, sweet jazz?

Jazzy Brian Blade Fellowship @ Zankel

This Friday, jazz drummer and composer Brian Blade’s Fellowship Band will perform at Zankel.

Formed in 1998, Blade’s band features a rotating cast of jazz luminaries, such as Jon Cowherd (piano), Christopher Thomas (bass), Melvin Butler (tenor sax), Myron Walden (alto sax), and Blade himself (drums) He has recorded with musicians ranging from Joni Mitchell, to Herbie Hancock, to Bob Dylan, and he’s arguably one of the finest jazz drummers currently working today. Definitely worth checking out.

Tickets are free for Skidmore students and  children, $8 for adults, and $5 for seniors and members of the Skidmore community.

Eric Harland Residency @ Zankel

Jazz Drummer Eric Harland, seen soloing in the video above with one time Skidmore musician-in-residence Terrence Blanchard, returns to The College for a two-day Filene Concert Series residency this Wednesday and Thursday (Feb. 16 and 17).

In a capstone concert on Thursday, Feb. 17 in  Zankel Harland will play with Taylor Eigsti (piano), Julian Lage (guitar), Harish Raghavan (bass), Chris Potter (saxophone), and Becca Stevens (vocals). General admission for the event is $12; $5 for students. Tickets are available online.

A Houston, Texas, native Harland was ‘discovered’ by Wynton Marsalis and has performed at Skidmore several times in the past five years, both with his own ensembles and as the featured drummer with other jazz greats.
