Hip Hop Alliance Presents: Blu

Monday, April 9th, 2012

This Friday, the Hip Hop Alliance is bringing hip hop up and comer Blu to the Spa. The LA-based rapper has been making a lot of waves recently, with his recent collaboration with producer Exile netting laudatory reviews. He’s really great, and we’re incredibly lucky to have him, especially since he’s FREE AS FUCK. Another SoCal rapper, DANakaDAN will open.

What is it with these amazing hip hop acts coming to Skidmore this year? First Onra, now Blu? Shit’s cray. My thanks to SEC and Hip Hop Alliance.

UPDATE: According to the Hip Hop Alliance, Blu will not be playing tomorrow night due to unforeseen circumstances. Instead, Saratoga’s very own Sime Gezus will be opening for DANakaDAN.

Friday, April 13 @ 10pm in Spa
Free admission

A Tribe Called Quest Documentary Showing

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Linden Boulevard represent represent

This Thursday, the Hip Hop Alliance will present a showing of Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest in Emerson Auditorium at 5pm.

Directed by the goofy white guy from The War at Home, Beats Rhymes & Life tells the story of groundbreaking Native Tongues hip hop group, A Tribe Called Quest and follows them on their most recent reunion tour. It’s a great documentary about a group that really helped shape hip hop (and I’d venture to say popular music) as we know it, full of fascinating interviews, neat old footage, and bright colors.

Also there’s a great scene where Busta Rhymes is talking about how “Lyrics to Go” makes him cry whenever he “hears that shit, b.”

Thursday, February 16 @ 5pm in Emerson

Hip Hop Alliance Presents: Blue Scholars

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Seattle based duo Blue Scholar will be performing in the Spa this Friday thanks to Hip Hop Alliance. The show is free and open to the public.

Blue Scholar started in 2002 when MC Geologic met DJ Sabzi at Washington University and the two have been making politically progressive ever since. Before the show make sure to stop by Hip Hop Alliance’s 2nd Annual Block Party in Northwoods for some free food and cheap beers.

Bling! Documentary Screening & Discussion

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Join Hip Hop Alliance and The United Students Against Sweatshops for a screening of Bling: Consequences and Repercussions a documentary tackling  the issues behind hip hop’s obsession with diamonds and the continued illegal diamond trade in West Africa. Jadakiss, Tego Calderon, Paul Wall and Kanye West travel to Sierra Leone to visit the Kono diamond mines and view the conditions of the miners and witness a nation destroyed by a decade long civil war that took over 100,000 lives and created a population of more than 200,000 amputees.
