SEC Presents: Javelin and HAP

Thursday, March 27th, 2014
Cool things happen when you find an abstract image on Google and layer it over and over and over.

Cool things happen when you find an abstract image on Google and layer it over and over and over.

This Saturday, SEC brings back Skidmore alumni lo-fi, indie-pop rock band HAP to open up the Falstaff’s stage for brooklyn-based electro-pop-rock duo Javelin. The two sets are sure to flow perfecty, with both bands offering bright, dance-inducing music.

Javelin consists of a set of cousins: George Langford (who went to Skidmore) and Tom Van Buskirk. Their sound is multifaceted, dynamic, and has matured wildly since their debut 2008 release, Jamz n Jemz. They’ve been known to incorporate electro-synth sounds, sampling techniques, noise rock-like riffs, pop-driven melodies, as well as a slew of coming-and-going instruments. The two are multi-instrumentalists and play everything from mandolin, to keyboard, to cello, to drums. They’ve been named a rising artist from Pitchfork, as well as given Best New Music accolades for their most recent project, Hi Beams. The seamless way these guys skirt the line between acoustic instrumentation and electro-pop sampling is what makes their music so rich. They’re definitely making moves with their lively, innovative pop styles, so get out and see them for free this Saturday at Falstaff’s, doors at 8.

The HAP Album Has Happed

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

HAP—the sentient haunted carnival that’s been making the rounds all year—has just released their debut album, Corners. It’s basically the aural manifestation of the feeling you get when you eat too much Halloween candy, which is to say, it’s fucking insane, and you should download it RIGHT NOW.

Good job, gents.

New HAP Single

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

The weirdos of HAP have released their new single, “Summertime Shuffle,” on Bandcamp. It sounds like the creeping, slithery soundtrack to a milkshake nightmare and it’s great. Check it out or be a square.

Get Ready for a Weekend of Cool Music (and Stephen Yell)

Thursday, February 21st, 2013
Los Elk at a recent performance

A recent Los Elk performance

There’s so much live music happening this weekend, it’s basically a joke. Let’s go through this list one by one:

Friday, February 22

  • HAP & Los Elk: You may remember HAP from last semester’s semi-secret boner show in the basement of Clinton Street. Half of the people in the band don’t even go here, so you won’t want to miss this. They’re also playing with Los Elk, and everyone knows them because they’re great live and they’re all cute Jewish boys (I think? May need to get Skidmore Unofficial’s fact checker/unpaid intern on that). 8pm @ Falstaff’s
  • Late City Nights: Branchez & Tony QuattroBleepy-bloop music from New York, along with a collection of Capital Region DJs spinning all night. Maybe you’ll do the Harlem Shake or something (DON’T).  9:30pm @ Putnam Den

Saturday, February 23

Let it be known that this weekend, Stephen Yell will be playing drums three times in 1/4 of the bands listed. What CAN’T that young man do?

Free, Great Singles from New Band HAP

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

Skidmore College is blessed with some incredibly talented people, and we at Skidmore Unofficial love promoting their shit (especially if its free). That’s why we’re proud to present HAP, a relatively new band of Skidmore all-stars that just released two singles on Band Camp.

These tracks are totally wild. They sound like the orgy-conceived offspring of Animal Collective, Brian Wilson, Gentle Giant, Of Montreal, and 10cc, and the song “Corners” is about as fun as I imagine riding a rollercoaster on ecstasy would be.

HAP is Sam Smith (who once went to Skidmore eons ago but now goes to Berklee) ’13, Ned Porter ’13, Stephen Yell ’13, and Evan Becker (Vassar) ’13. They recorded these songs in Boston over the summer and you’re missing out if you don’t download them now.
