Friend Me – Speed Dating/Meeting & Free Plum Dandy

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Those friendly kids at the Center for Sex and Gender Relations are always looking out for us. This time, they’ve organized a speed-dating-but-not-speed-dating event called ‘Friend Me’. Think of it as a real-world social network happening in real-time with real-people. It might be awkward because you can’t use internet creeping to find the topics of conversation most likely to impress your new friends, but I’m sure it will all work out in the end if you open your mouth and ask a few questions. If you get really stuck, invite them to a game of Ms. Pac Man or comment on how huge and awesome those bean bag chairs are. Maybe then you could invite them to go sit in one of them while you eat your free Plum Dandy. Dig it? I’m good with this stuff, I’m here for you.

I would recommend bringing a small mirror, an iPhone 4, or a trusted buddy to check your teeth with – Plum Dandy nuts and sprinkles stuck in your clickers is no way to impress your new friend.

Thursday 8:00-10:00pm @ Game Room in Case

Sangwych at SkidShop

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

The SkidShop continues to do this weird thing where they entice local business to come to campus and give away free food.  This seems great but how am I supposed to prepare for real life? I thought in real life there are no free rides and no money trees. I know college is supposed to challenge my preconceptions but SkidShop you are being ridiculous. It’s now guaranteed that come next year, I’ll be unemployed and starving.

Ok, so this new sandwich place in town, Sangwych will be coming tomorrow to the shop at 5 and giving away free samples. I’m looking at the menu right now and oh black betty bam ba lam.  These sangwychs are fire.  I’m about to smang the Bensonhurst sangwych super hard.

sangs all day long

SGA Speech Night 2011

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Skidmore Class of 1980

You might have done something with school government in high school, and it was probably really cute, like asking for better cookies at the cafeteria or organizing the annual Battle of the Bands. Shit gets even more intense at the college level: our politically-minded peers are, at this very moment, practicing the skills that will get them Capitol Hill internships, consulting jobs, and maybe even the shot at public office. Let’s hope they use their powers for good.

Come hear what they want to do for you during their time at Skidmore, and figure out who you wanna vote for. Oh also, Esperantos. Those guys are everywhere.

Wednesday 6-9 @ The Spa

If you can’t make it, it will also be broadcast live on SkidTV (Channel 16) so you can watch it from the comfort of your own wherever-your-TV-is.

Carnival at the D-Hall

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Guilty pleasure

For no apparent reason other than the fact that they love us very very much, the kind folks at the Dining Hall are throwing a Carnival-themed party on Thursday night – and it is free for everyone!

Now, we’re not entirely sure what kind of carnival inspired this celebration, so expect either corn dogs and fried dough, masquerade and floats, or portable casinos and something called a ‘Lido Deck’. That last option seems most probable, seeing as how we already have an all-you-can-eat buffet and an Atrium.

The Downlow will be playing a short set from 5:30-6:30, which is really a shame, because they play the best music on earth.*

Ujima Presents: Jazz Cafe

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Tonight is Ujima’s Jazz Cafe, featuring performances by the Skidmore Jazz Ensemble, various spoken word artists, and dancers. The event also has tons of free food catered by Dining Services, Max London’s and Plum Dandy.

If the allure of live music and free food wasn’t enough to lure you down to The Spa tonight you should know that the first 150 attendees will receive a free gift.

Friday 9pm @ The Spa

Student Art In The Library Opening

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

When I grow up I want to be filthy stinking rich. I want to live in a huge apartment in Manhattan and throw money out the windows. I want to be like Scrooge McDuck and dive into piles of gold coins. My secret plan to accomplish this is to become an art dealer and that is why I am going to go to the opening reception of the new Student Art In The Library Exhibit.

I am going to schmooze and rub elbows with Skidmore’s incredibly talented stable of artists until they foolishly come to trust me and then I will buy their artwork at measly prices—that is, if I cannot charm it out of them for free—and sell it on the international market for incredible profit.  Join me Wednesday March 9th at 5pm.

Spring Street Deli At The SkidShop

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Want to know a secret? The best hangover cure available without a perscription in Saratoga County is an order of bacon cheese fries from Spring Street Deli (with hot sauce).

If you’re interested in meeting the masterminds behind this wonderful creation you should stop by the SkidShop today between 5 and 7pm to thank them for reinvigorating your Saturday mornings and clogging your arteries.

Spring Street is on campus thanks to the SkidShop’s ongoing generous series of free food events that we don’t deserve.

You + Emily Post = Career

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

Dear Barbarians,

Are you finding the world of job searching similarly opaque? Do your feel that your ham fisted table manners are keeping you from being the best person you can be? Have you realized that trying to find a job in the midst of this economic downturn involves seizing every opportunity and never making any mistakes? Do you think that finding a job has something to do with knowing which fork is the salad fork? Maybe you should attend the Real World Business Etiquette dinner.

Dinner is free and you get to learn about the importance of “personal branding” which is such a laugh out loud concept that I might just attend for the jokes.

If you’re interested make sure to RSVP to Anne Delauney ’04 in the Office of Alumni Affairs at adelaune@skidmore.edu or x5611

Free Plum Dandy = Bourgeois Cultural Capital

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of pop culture knows that frozen yogurt is the new low-carb version of sliced bread. I challenge you to watch an episode of Gossip Girl, Real Housewives of New York et. al without at least a passing shot of a Tasti D-Lite—-this shit is everywhere.

And why is this important you ask? Well, because tomorrow in front of the SkidShop Saratoga’s own Frozen Yogurt/sushi/bubble tea/gummy bear palace Plum Dandy will be handing out free samples and if you want to appear culturally relevant and in tune with current trends it behooves you to show up between 5 and 7pm to get spotted indulging.
