Kalhor to Melt Faces With Kamancheh Solo

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Twice a year Skidmore gets lucky and somehow gets to host post-masters-level students of music from Julliard, Carnegie Hall, and the Weill Music Institute, which as wikipedia tells me—are all pretty big deals. The program, called “Carnegie Hall Premieres,” is somehow connected to the New York State Education Department and means Skidmore gets to host live performances of some pretty noticeable up-and-comers in the infamous world of classically trained musicians.

This semester’s Carnegie Hall Premiere features Iranian musician Kayhan Kalhor performing his piece “Silent City.” The composition commemorates a Kurdish village in Iraq destroyed by Saddam Hussein, and if his resume didn’t impress you enough, Kalhor will be performing this piece on everybody’s favorite Persian bowed string instrument: the Kamancheh, which while impossible to pronounce, probably sounds pretty cool, I guess. There are two other classical pieces on the bill that night so if Kalhor doesn’t float your boat you can at least tell your grandparents you enjoyed some Schubert.

Ninety One Point One Night of Fun

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Following the success of last weeks Mount Eerie and Julie Doiron concert WSPN is hosting two events this Thursday night. Firstly the Saratoga “psych/electro amazingness band extraordinaire” Charlie Everywhere is performing on the roof the Tang museum. The concert is early (7-9pm), so hopefully it wont be a repeat of last year’s world record breaking up of the Snakes Say Hiss concert in the same location. Opening for Charlie Everywhere are the boys behind Thursday nights at MARE so come early. Once you’ve had enough “psych/electro amazingness” (or the clock strikes 9) head over to Case Gallery for WSPN ON-AIR a WSPN sponsored art exhibit featuring program guides, clouds and 24 hours of WSPN broadcasts. Facebook encourages a “mass exodus” of people from the Tang to Case so maybe you can tag along.

P.S. Tons of art show goodies like cheese and stuff at the exhibit. so yea…

oktSOBERfest

Monday, September 29th, 2008

This weekend, inter-hall council will be producing its first event of the year. The event will run all weekend, and will not be cut short by freshmen, or anyone, being taken to the lovely Saratoga Hospital because there will be no alcohol provided. Instead, sober up and go catch some balls at dodgeball with Lucy Scrib’, and take a trip to Candyland. And if you want to spice things up a bit on your own, bring your friend JD. I hear he knows how to party…

Here’s a list of the events going on at Oktoberfest ’08:

Ramadan Dinner

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Go and break the Ramadan fast with Hayat, Skidmore’s Muslim culture club. Hayat is sponsoring a Ramadan dinner tomorrow night at Falstaff’s at 7pm. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, and a time to fast. During Ramadan Muslims concentrate on their faith and spend less time on the concerns of their everyday lives. It is a time of spiritual reflection, contemplation, prayer, doing good deeds and spending time with family and friends. Hayat will celebrate and break the fast during the Ramadan dinner.

Pizza and Politics

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Have you ever wished you could see John McCain’s jowly face stretched across the big screen in Gannett? Well wish no more, because this Friday the SYRA and Skidmore Dems will be co-hosting a viewing of the first presidential debate on that very screen. Get your apathetic ass over to Gannett at 9pm and educate yourself. This debate, the first of many, is hosted by a forerunner in American partisanship Ole’ Miss University, and promises to focus on such important issues as “Where have all the flag pins gone?” “Who is more elite?” and also boring stuff like foreign policy and shit.

Pizza will be served to those of you who know what a filibuster is (or if you ask politely I’m sure).

Not-So-Naked Run

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Sign ups for Skidmore’s second most famous running event, the Celebration Weekend 5k, have now begun.

While not as popular among freshmen boys as the SOC’s Naked Run, the Celebration Weekend 5k is a great opportunity to falsely reassure prove to yourself that all that dining hall General Tso’s pork hasn’t done a thing. The Run is Sunday October 19th at 11am, but we figured we would give you a heads up so you can start training now. For those of you interested you can register here.

Mount Eerie to play Falstaff’s

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

This Thursday, Falstaff’s will host K Records recording artists Phil Elverum, of Microphones fame, as well as Julie Doiron and Calm Down, It’s Monday. The concert is co-sponsored by Lively Lucy’s and WSPN and is free for students. Falstaff’s will open its doors at 8:30 but the show begins at 9pm, however we recommend you get there early and find yourself a seat.
