Dr. MLK’s Legacy in the Age of Obama

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Tomorrow marks not only the second straight day of snow, but Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. In observance of this holiday, Skidmore has planned a fun-filled, history-packed day to pay tribute to the King. Starting from 1:30-4pm, the Saratoga Springs Public Library will host a commemorative presentation titled “A New Birth of Freedom,” a famed quotation from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and by no coincidence Obama’s inaugural theme. The trip into town will be serviced by none other than a “Freedom Bus.”

Additional events include:

  • A “light” supper in the Gannett lobby @ 4:30-5pm
  • An excerpt from the documentary Eyes on the Prize with discussion led by an expert panel in Davis Auditorium @ 5-6:30pm
  • A dessert reception fit for MLK himself in the Gannett lobby @ 6:30 pm

The events are free and open to the public, so don’t worry, you can still buy your textbooks.

Moooorebid is Coming…

Monday, October 27th, 2008

For those of you who haven’t already decided to go as a “college student,” or as an attractive Sarah Palin, put that “Creative Thought Matters”  mantra to the test and think of something before all Wal-Mart has left is this. Moorebid Ball is this weekend—Friday (Halloween) night to be exact—and there will be a costume contest at 11pm where the winner will receive a glorious prize. This year, all of Case is fair game. Lightsaber fights shall have temporary free reign over the entire student center, but all pod-racers and other weird big things should be kept outside.

Down the Middle (School)

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Miss middle school? Sure you do. After all, braces and school bus rides are some of our most fond memories. Anyways, Skidmore student Jeremy Cone ’09 is producing a new musical tribute to your favorite middle school memories and all of those prepubescent crushes in a musical called “Down the Middle.” We’re thinking “Degrassi” meets “Mean Girls” with a dab of “Lion King” for some of that musical influence, however with a lot less “Hakuna Matata” and a lot more worries.

When: Friday @ 8pm & Saturday @ 2pm and 8pm

Where: Dance Theatre (somewhere near the gym)

Somehow, the crack research team over here at Unofficial has gotten their hands on a description of the musical by “Down the Middle” star Zubin Mobedshahi… Click to continue »

Glotzbach Speaks

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Buried deep in the bowels of this week’s “student announcement digest” there shines a brief letter from the desk of president Glotzbach. The Ol’ Captain himself will be giving two college updates this week focusing “on the current economic situation and the challenges it presents to us personally and to the College as a whole.“  Think of them as mini state of the union addresses but with less clapping.  Interested? October 22 at 1pm in Davis or Thursday, October 23, at 11am in Gannett.

p.s. We will be there so you don’t have to be. Maybe we’ll even liveblog it or something goofy like that (but probably not).

This Land is Harland

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Hailed as one of the top drummers of our generation, Eric “Hercules” Harland will be on campus today and tomorrow hosting a slew of master classes, as well as putting on a concert. Harland is a part of what’s considered an all-star jazz ensemble, the SFJAZZ Collective, but will instead be playing in a quartet along side 2-time Grammy nominee pianist Taylor Eigsti, guitarist Julian Lage, and bassist Harish Raghavan. Tomorrow’s jazz super-show will take place in the Filene Recital hall, beginning around 8pm and lasting until roughly 10pm, depending on how long it takes you stoners to find your way to your seats. The show will cost a small, yet unfortunate $2 for students (and senior citizens), so don’t be afraid to steal some Saratoga Elementary student’s lunch money if need be.

The Filene Concert Series has brought in many notable acts in contemporary Jazz including Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter, and John Scofield.

Debate III: Ayers of Confidence

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

The third and final presidential debate is scheduled for 9 pm tonight. Will Gentleman Johnny take the gloves off and bring up kinda-former-terrorist-but-nowadays-respected-Chicago-civic-leader Bill Ayers? How obvious will it be that Obama is just trying to run out the clock? Just what the hell is ACORN, anyways? For the (undoubtedly canned) answers to these questions and more, head by the Spa and check it out.

(But probably just get a couple of 40s, some buddies, and watch it in your room while listening closely for the phrases “maverick,” “change,” “last eight years” and “my friends.”)

Dick Cheney Not Invited

Monday, October 13th, 2008

At this point you have probably spent the previous five weeks laboriously building for yourself a wholesome reputation; a reputation whose good points will hopefully be shattered in The Hunt. The Hunt, which can only be described as “much more than a scavenger hunt,” is put on by an anonymous group and usually involves exciting levels of debauchery, or at least weirdness. The actual Hunt isn’t for a while now, but there is an interest meeting on Thursday at 7pm in Bolton 281.

Here is what you have to do: find four of five people you like (e.g., your friends), take these people and form a “team”, send at least one representative from this team to the aforementioned meeting with a team name and 5 bucks per person. More details will be given at the meeting but there is a 40 team limit so be diligent.

Amy & Davy Come To Campus Via Student Play

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

The David and Amy Sedaris play “The Book of Liz” opens this Sunday on campus as a student directed project. Headed by senior Rachel Roderman, and featuring Leah Cohen ’11, Alex Dayan ’11, Nathaniel Moore ’12, & Isabelle Russo ’11, the play is a bizarre, witty, Amish, journey written in the recognizably Sedaris dry and biting style. Plus, like, who doesn’t love David Sedaris?

The Book of Liz is showing in Studio A of the JKB Theater starting Sunday October 5th at 8pm and again Monday and Tuesday at 8.
