Monday, November 23rd, 2009Mayor Johnson’s Signing of the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement!
Friday, October 23rd, 2009EAC representative Becca Kolins ’12 writes in to tell us about Saratoga Springs Mayor Scott Johnson signing the Climate Protection Agreement.
This SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24TH at 12:30 at the Farmer’s Market, we will be celebrating past initiatives within the signing of the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement as well as Mayor Scott Johnson’s current signing of the agreement. Both of these are symbolic to the city’s stance of becoming sustainable in today’s world. What is this you may ask yourself? WELL, for over the past year, a group of Skidmore students have been working on a campaign called Cool Cities. This campaign asks Saratoga Springs to reduce their carbon emissions 7 percent below 1990s levels by 2012. Once the mayor signs on to the agreement (THIS SATURDAY OCTOBER 24TH) a carbon emissions inventory will be done on the town and from there we will be able to see where most of the energy in town is coming from. We can then develop a plan to help us reduce our emissions. YAY!
The reason it is happening THIS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24TH is because that is the International Day of Climate Action (as you should have seen advertised around campus). This is the day chosen by Bill McKibben, creator of 350.org as the day of climate action. 350 is important because in order to prevent irreversible climatic damage, we must get Earth’s parts per billion of carbon in the atmosphere down to this number (we are at around 390).
This SATURDAY OCTOBER 24TH is going to be hugely monumental for Saratoga and as members of the community, EVERYONE should come out to show their support for the signing of the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement!
For more information you can contact rdrago@skidmore.edu
Go early and get some delicious foodstuffs from the Farmer’s Market also.

Earth Hour Saturday 8pm
Friday, March 27th, 2009
Aurora Pinkey-Drobnis ’12 from the EAC wrote in to let us all know about Earth Hour on Saturday night…
Earth Hour is a global movement. The main purpose is to spread awareness about climate change and environmental issues. On this Saturday at 8:30, 2,848 cities, towns and municipalities in 84 countries have already committed to turning off their electricity for one hour. While we couldn’t get Skidmore to agree to shutting their buildings down, we were hoping that students at Skidmore would voluntarily shut off their lights. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

EAC Gardening Survey
Sunday, November 30th, 2008
Remember the earth between your toes? The sweet smell of vegetables? The lushness of freshly picked strawberries? No, I’m not talking about your Junior Year resume padding volunteer trip to South America, I’m talking about gardening, no nonsense organic gardening. The EAC seems to be gauging student interest in a student-run organic garden, something I stand behind fully. Not only is this a great opportunity to start another much needed student-run campus project, but vegetables are yummy. That is enough preaching from me, but make sure to take this survey (previously buried in the Student Announcements Digest) and let them know what you think.
