Beatlemore/Skidmania to Return Nov. 22nd

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

While personally they don’t tickle my fancy I know how much all you kids love the Beatles so I’m sure you’ll all be excited to know that Beatlemore/SkidMania will return once again this year. “Abby Road” will be the theme of this year’s concert with performances slated from a gaggle of Acapella groups, Gung Ho and the Rust Brothers—a band featuring members of the Skidmore faculty.

This show is often one of the most well attended events on campus so I suggest you show up early–maybe even tailgate. the show starts at 3pm but the doors will open at 2pm and they are expected to go quickly, but if you don’t get in you could always just play some Beatles RockBand.

Skidmore Is Good At Concerts

Monday, January 5th, 2009

I’m not sure who Andrew Moll is, or what 411mania.com is for that matter, but it seems he knows who we are. Andrew has named SEC’s September concert with DaGirlTalkz and Prefuse 73 his “favorite concert of the year” over on 411mania’s Best of 2008 list.  Andrew reminds us that on that night people came together “in a college gym [to] enjoy themselves at a rave/dance party/sex romp with the best soundtrack imaginable.”

Thanks bro, we love you too.

Santy Meets Lena

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Buried in the depths of Brooklyn Phila St. rests Caffe Lena, the “Best Small Venue in North America” according to the International Folk Alliance. Located next to Hattie’s (whose chicken is da bomb!), this venue caters to Skidmores’ musicians, as it often supports acts from small Jazz ensembles and more. This Wednesday, Lena’s EMERGING ARTIST BREAKOUT#$!@% will feature Skidmore student Luke Santy accompanied by Julia Ilowieck, who according to Facebook, did/does not go to Skidmark.

Where: Caffe Lena (47 Phila Street)
When: Wednesday, Dec 10th @ 7-8pm
How: Take the bus

BeatleMore Mania

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Lately, the days have been pretty fucking gray, the nights darker and darker, and it is getting undeniably cold outside. Although all you see is outside is black, there’s sure to be some white. Not to be confused with snow, here white refers to the Beatles’ “White Album,” which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this Saturday, November 22. In the spirit of wild honey pie, Beatlemania, under the alias “Beatlemore Skidmania” (some mash-up of Beatlemania and Skidmore, I think), will be playing this weekend in the “storied” halls of Filene. The acts will feature students, faculty, and maybe some videos of people playing the sitar. Songs will be mostly from the 2-disc White Album. “Beatlemore Skidmania” will be Sunday, November 23 @ 3pm so you can find your way to the show before it gets dark.

But wait, there’s more. The day before, Skidmore has gathered a Beatle-expert panel to discuss the Beatles’ “lasting cultural contributions.” The panel, accompanied by Professor Gordon Thompson, will include Allan Kozinn (New York Times critic and author of The Beatles), Walter Everett (University of Michigan, and author of The Beatles as Musicians), Tim Riley (National Public Radio commentator and author of Tell Me Why: A Beatles Commentary), and Jonathan Gould (author of Can’t Buy Me Love: The Beatles, Britain and America). The panel will assemble on the fateful November 22 @ 1pm.

Guy Has Average Time at Girl Talk Concert

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

After a recent performance by musical mash-up artist Gregg Gillis, more commonly known by his stage name “Girl Talk”, one student reported that the concert was an overall pleasurable experience.

“Yeah, I had a decent time,” said sophomore Andrew Rosen. “I thought the music was pretty cool, and I had fun dancing.”

“I like the whole mash-up thing,” Rosen elaborated. “I hadn’t really heard of it before, but I think it’s a good idea. I might even go to my local record store and buy a few of his CDs.”

Rosen admits to attending the show in a slightly altered state, albeit very slightly.

“I had a couple beers with some friends before the show,” Rosen said. “I was going to have more, maybe like three or four, but I drank the second beer a little too quickly and became somewhat queasy.” Click to continue »
