Tonight is the first meeting of the wonderful Student Entertainment Committee (SEC). The SEC is responsible for entertaining us although this, unfortunately, is generally limited to concerts.

Anyway the meeting tonight is in Ladd 307 at 9pm. This is the perfect opportunity for you to save your reputation and make sure everyone knows you are not actually as awkward as you came across at the club fair. It’s also a good thing to do if you want to vote for their new board members or if you want to suggest your friends really amazing (still unsigned) band to play an intimate but intense show at Falstaff’s. Or just go because it’s 9pm on Monday and what else do you have to do?

With President Patrick shipping off for a stint overseas Julia Brenner—the current vice president—will be taking the reins of SEC for the rapidly approaching spring semester. Her first official order of business was the creation of this discussion forum where students can offer up some of their opinions.

All you kids grumbling about the choice of bands and frequency of shows don’t even have to get up off your asses to share your opinions anymore. Have at it boys!

This Saturday evening, fans packed into an off campus house for one, or two . . . or maybe three reasons and three reasons only: to get drunk as shit, possibly hook up with that cute girl from physics, and see some live music. What concertgoers found upon stumbling into the door, after exiting from the overpriced cab ride (cause Alpine really wasn’t that great) and immediately being asked for ‘5 bucks’ for a red solo cup, was the live music experience of a lifetime. The smell of weed, cigarettes, and spilled beer emanated in the home, accompanied by the crashing of symbols and the ring of catchy guitar riffs and bass lines.

“You really don’t get a lot of chances to sing along to a live band performing near forgotten rock songs of the 90s with other drunk people. That is something I wish people would cherish more nowadays” said one fan of the anonymous cover band who played such crowd pleasers as Weezer’s “Say it Ain’t So” and Blink 182’s “What’s My Age Again?” The party spanned from the front porch all the way through the dining room/kitchen/living room/stage and into the bonfire filled backyard and porch, but the real focus was on the music inside. “I was completely captivated by them,” said one fan, “I even took a break from my flip-cup game just to take it all in.”

As for the band members, who will remain anonymous, they have been playing together for almost two years now. What started out as a simple outlet to fool around and play some fun music with friends has since expanded into an outlet to fool around and play silly songs in front of drunk college students. With their first album Cover Art out later this month, the band has just embarked on its first campus tour since its founding.

If their jaw dropping live performance this Saturday is any indication as to the quality or material on the album, we can rest assured it will not disappoint. After all the fans exited the party at around 4 AM, the bassist had some insight to some of the album’s material: “We have compiled what we feel are some of the most cliché and forgettable songs we can think of, and we feel that the collection will achieve the goals the band has set. The tracks are all nostalgia inducing and enjoyable to just throw on at a party, especially if we can’t perform (chuckle).” The band hinted at some of the tracks to be on the debut LP, including Bare Naked Ladies’ “One Week,” Matchbox 20’s “3 AM,” and Tonic’s “If You Could Only See.” Until the album hits dorm rooms, you can catch the band performing at next week’s party, whenever your friends find out where its poppin’ off.
