Academic Festival – Fun, Even If It’s Mandatory!

Monday, April 30th, 2012

"Have something to say, do you now?"

You know how is seems like all the clubs on campus are hosting their final blowout events at the same time? Same situation with the nerds. Check the Academic Festival program for the times when your friends are presenting and consider attending, if only because you’re friends. Or perhaps because being a senior does in fact mean that one has completed 3-4 years of studies, and while only a mere undergraduate in the eyes of hard-ass academia, these seniors may actually have some unique bits o’ knowledge for you to consider.

…or not.

Either way, email your professors and see if you can get extra credit for attending some of the presentations.

Academic Festival Meets Many Minds

Monday, April 27th, 2009

This Thursday, April 30, is a day of excellence for Skidmore academia as students present on their yearlong “my professor is making me do this” project. It seems that all that work has finally paid off, and to celebrate this momentous occasion Skidmore will host the 11th annual Academic Festival sponsored by the Honors Forum.

This year there are 321 presenters and a full day of presentations, performances, surveys, and films to sum up about 170 days of work. The disciplines featured at the event will range from the top to the bottom of the master schedule, and will be located appropriately throughout every academic building/hall. According to Scope, there will be a showing of the pilot episode for “Lost on Purpose,” which I had first interpreted as a summary of LOST (I was wrong). There will also be a presentation on “transformation geometry,” an examination of math as it relates to music, art, and integral triangles.

Check Scope for more information; there’s a downloadable schedule so you don’t miss your friend’s presentation because you wanted a chicken patty.

Proposals for Academic Festival due April 6

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

The 2009 Academic Festival Planning Committee reminds you that the deadline for submitting proposals for the 2009 Academic Festival is 5 p.m. Monday, April 6. “Celebrating Excellence” is the theme of this year’s event, scheduled for Thursday, April 30.

“The day is a celebratory showcase for your most impressive work this past academic year,” says David Vella, director of the Honors Forum.  “It’s a day-long event that’s filled with talks, readings, panel discussions, performances, films, and more–all created and delivered by you, the Skidmore student. It’s an excellent opportunity to get out and see what students are working on across the campus, and to share your good work with your friends, classmates, professors, and Skidmore staff.”

More information about the Festival can be found in the brochures you should have received this week in campus mail, Vella says. Or feel free to ask any of your professors about it.

“For now,” he continues, “just remember that for any proposal you’ll need a faculty member to sponsor your project. Your faculty sponsor should also help you shape and develop your proposal over the coming weeks so the final product you deliver on April 30 will be one of which you can be proud.”

You may submit your proposal via this online form.
