Grizzly Bear and Gang Gang Dance Tickets: So Hot Right Now

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

The Grizzly Bros

Today begins the final countdown to the first-semester-spectacle that is SEC’s Big Show. Skidmore will host Grizzly Bear and Gang Gang Dance this Friday at 8pm. Just like last week, tickets will be on sale in Case Center from 11am-4pm and will set you back $5 for students and $20 for the public.

Since this is one of those rare opportunities where you get to see two amazing bands for the price of one mediocre band the SEC head honchos anticipate selling out of public tickets so it is recommended that you hastily secure your admission. If you can’t make it to campus to procure your tickets they can also be purchased online here.

SEC meets every Monday night at 8pm in Ladd 307

The County Election, George Caleb Bingham, 1851

The Skidmore News published on Friday has a good article about the murky waters surrounding the election of this year’s Senior Class President.  The election, held last April, was contested on grounds of voter coercion and resulted in the disqualification of incumbent Mia Guajardo.  SkidNews has the full story here.

If you own a bike and plan on riding to campus for class, or even live on campus and need to get from Tower to the DHall, you’ll want to be sure your bike can handle it. Tomorrow afternoon, from 11am-2pm, the Elevate Bike Shop will be on the Case walkway (next to Burgess) to perform minor bike repairs such as lubing your chains and pumping your tubes. Also, if you have any questions on bikes please feel free to stop by. Representatives from the Skidmore Cycling Team will be present to provide information on riding in Saratoga and to discuss cycling plans for the upcoming year.

Final Day of Textbook Return

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Tomorrow, Thursday September 17th, is the final day of textbook return at the Skidmore Shop. Students who have dropped classes or realized they do not need certain textbooks would be wise to return their unwanted tomes for a full refund. The Skidhop will have regular weekday hours: 9:15am-5pm.

You will need the following items to return textbooks:

  • The books you are returning (obviously).
  • The original receipt (probably still stapled to that ugly orange thing).
  • The original card (credit, debit or SkidID) you used to purchase your books.
  • A polite attitude.

CSGR Reopens for Semester

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

The Center for Sex and Gender Relations opened its doors this Monday to provide to a safe, confidential space where students may have open and frank discussions of sexual and relationship issues. The CSGR works with local organizations to offer advocacy, training, and education pertaining to all aspects of sexual health and sexual conduct.

The Center also stocks a variety of condoms, lubricants and forms of contraception and provides programming throughout the semester, inclduing the always popular sex toy party.

CSGR Peer Advocate Joe Yanks ’11 explains

The vast majority of sexual assault and rape on college campuses occur during the first six weeks of school. Students should never hesitate to come have an open, confidential talk with the Center’s staff.  Our new weekend hotline is available at (518) 256-1439 Thursday 7pm-Sunday 7pm. You can call for quick questions, or to get immediate help for a crisis (Sexual assault, domestic violence, etc). It’s important to note that while we are confidential, we are required by law to report sexual assaults to the government because of the Cleary Act (Although we can report as much, or as little, as you’re comfortable with).

The Center is open:
M/W: 1-8pm
T/Th: 3-8pm
F: 1-5pm

At The Tang

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Currently the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum is hosting 2 exhibitions. The Tang is free for students and like all museums is a great place to escape and nurse a hangover.

Lives of the Hudson focuses on the history of New York’s Hudson River. Organized into 4 themes the exhibition explores 200 years of the Hudson as the natural river, the imagined river, the human river, and the working river.

Amazement Park is a yearlong exhibition of work from artist Stan VanDerBeek, his daughter Sara VanDerBeek (b. 1976) and son Johannes VanDerBeek (b. 1982). Based on a dream Stan VanDerBeek had in 1980 Amazement Park features an experimental studio space with drawing, sculpture, films, photography, stills, and collage from all three artists that will change each month. “Over the course of the year, a multi-layered picture of influence and experimentation will emerge.”
