Romantico Screening Monday, 7pm

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Tomorrow (3/23) filmmaker Mark Becker will be on campus screening his highly decorated film Romantico and giving a brief talk. The film will be shown in Davis auditorium at 7pm, stick around afterwards for a talk with the filmmaker.

ROMANTICO is an immigration tale in reverse. The documentary is about Mexican musician Carmelo Muniz Sanchez, who returns home to his wife and daughters after years playing the San Francisco taqueria circuit. Once he returns to his hometown — a thousand miles south of the border — he finds himself confronted with the million reasons he left in the first place years ago. But back home with his family, and at the age of sixty, another border crossing begins to seem absurd.

Forno Bistro likes the Skid Card

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Ever end up downtown at night and forget your wallet because all you ever do is carry around your SkidID? Well that happened to me last night. And when that usually means I’d be begging for money, now the ristorante Forno Bistro has it all taken care of. Yes, they’ve added themselves to the ranks of “Off Campus Merchants” that accept the Skid Card. Ahh, convenience is good.

To introduce their new payment plan, today through Thursday the Forno Bistro will be offering $8 pizza & beer. Also, it’s really close. Just check the map if you don’t believe me.

Campo Reminds Students They Aren’t Living In Crime Free Fantasy

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Sometimes Skidmore feels like a crime free bubble; I leave my laptop unattended in the library, I haven’t locked my door in weeks, and my bicycle goes unchained.  While this little fantasyland of integrity is ok, I let out a sigh of relief this morning when I read this email from Campus Safety:

We are urging everyone to lock your vehicles at all times.  Recently we have had incidents where items have been stolen from unlocked vehicles on campus.  These items included wallets, Ipods, and GPS devices.
Please lock your vehicles at all times and remove valuable items from obvious view.

Just when I thought I was living in some sort of suffocating pleasantville someone went out and did something perfectly normal (albeit skeevy). Thank god for petty crime for bringing us all back to the real world.

Q & A: Ian Berry on the Persistence of Optimism

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Scope Online has posted a (very) short Q&A with Ian Berry, Malloy Curator at the Tang Museum and member of the Museum Tang Clan. While it may not be as good, or as long or, as funny as last night’s Q&A with Ian Mackaye it is worth checking out if you have any interest in curation or this weekend’s YES Symposium.

Okay, I took a peek at some of Scope Q&As and they are actually pretty cool–at least for a Thursday afternoon. Check the rest out here.
