Commencement Information

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Glotzbach has put up some information about the 2009 Commencement Ceremony on the Skidmore homepage. While this year’s speakers aren’t listed you can find a handy dandy “holy shit am I going to graduate” checklist and a schedule of events, which I’m sure students with families flying in for the ceremony will appreciate.

Big Green Scream

Thursday, February 19th, 2009
PONYS!!!

After last years success The Big Green Scream returns on Sat., Feb. 21 when the men’s and women’s basketball teams will take on William Smith and Hobart in a Liberty League doubleheader at the Sports and Recreation Center.  The women’s game starts at 2 pm, followed by the men’s game at 4 pm. The day will be speckled with performances, give-aways and prizes.

If you were unwittingly roped into your dorms study break last week I’m sure your RA chewed your ear off about winning a foosball table. Those cute posters your guys made will be judged by crowd applause at the men’s half time, with the coveted foosball table going to the winner. The first 350 fans to arrived will receive super secret special gift from the Environmental Action Club and there will be a variety of contests and giveaways throughout both games.

There is no admission charge for the game, but for $10 in advance, fans receive lunch, T-shirt, and special raffle ticket. There is no charge for lunch for Skidmore Meal Plan holders who swipe their card.

For more information on Saturday’s event check the Skidmore Athletics Homepage.

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009
Elaine Showalter

Elaine Showalter

Elaine Showalter is on campus today giving a lecture “A Literary History of American Women Writers” at the Surrey Williamson Inn. Showalter is a well-established academic and literary critic who in her most famous work, Toward a Feminist Poetics, developed the concept and practice of gynocriticism, which works to establish women writers are a separate literary tradition.

Showalter’s visit is sponsored by the English Department and will begin at 5pm, The Surrey Willliamson Inn is located across N. Broadway nextdoor to the Admissions buildings.

Reminder: Etiquette 101

Monday, February 16th, 2009

This is a reminder that if you plan on eating dinner with Obama, the Queen, or your girlfriends’ parents over break, you should probably consider this. Career Services wants to help thwart all etiquette infractions you could possibly commit at the dinner table by offering a one-time “Real World Etiquette Dinner.” The idea is this: as a recent college grad in the worst economic meltdown of our lives, you need every advantage possible to get a job. Skidmore Unofficial agrees and assures you that knowing how to eat properly is a start. We also believe that knowing how to play golf is even better. So perhaps after the etiquette dinner, which is this Friday at 5:45p on the 2nd floor of the DHall, you should schedule a tee-time at one of these fine places.

Five Guys Bypass and Fries

Monday, February 16th, 2009

I know this doesn’t really have anything to do with Skidmore/it is pathetic to write about fast food on the internet but HOLY SHIT this place is sooo good. I went to Five Guys* for the first time today and I knew from the second the first droplet of burger grease dripped from my chin I was addicted. One of these joints just opened on Route 50 down by Wilton Mall, right next to a huge sign that says “Chipotle Burritos Coming Soon.” So yea, that is your artery clogging news for today.

*don’t let the website fool you, they do not serve any “grilled sandwiches” pure unadulterated red meat baby.

Free Gift for Stolen Souls

GOTCHAs inaugural winner

GOTCHA's inaugural winner

Along with a website redesign Skidshop is launching a cool new contest this week called GOTCHA. A strange money saving hybrid of PUNK’D and Facebook stalking, the contest involves Skidshop’s “secret photographer” roaming the campus and taking a picture of one random student each week who, if they are lucky enough to realize they have been photographed, can come into the shop and receive a free gift. And while it has already seemed to ruffle some feathers on the ACB we think it is a pretty god damn good idea, we just hope it dosent lead to any paparazzi camera smashing ala Kanye West.

Anyhoo bookmark this page and keep checking in to see if you’re a winner.
