Filene: The Christian McBride Band

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Christian McBride, a Grammy Award winning musician from Philadelphia will be performing in Filene on March 2nd at 8pm. Christian McBride is one of the most respected upright bassists in the music scene today. While on campus he will be playing with his band composed of musicians Ron Blake, Geoffrey Keezer, and Terreon Gully. In addition to those three, McBride has been spotted playing with other musicians at the front of the industry: Sting’s bassist for 2 years, Herbie Hancock, and Sunny Rollings. He recently recorded an album for Philadelpia-based record label Ropeadope, which features DJ Logic, Scratch (from The Roots), Charlie Hunter, and Eric Krasso (from Soulive). He also was a part of the collaborative work of the Philadelphia Experiment, which included Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson with the sticks and Uri Kaine on the keys.

Tickets are now on sale in the Music Department office before 4pm for $2 (students/seniors) and $5 (public). Get ‘em now because tickets open up for sale to the public on Wednesday (2/25) and are expected to sell like proverbial hot cakes.

Commencement Speakers Chosen

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Glotzbach dropped some serious commencement knowledge this morning when he revealed this year’s graduation speakers. On the May 16th ceremony Skidmore will confer honorary degrees to Carter F. Bales, Kati Marton and Fred Wilson. Names not ringing any bells? Read on homie.

Each of these esteemed guests, along with Janet Lucas Whitman ‘59, chair of the board of trustees; Ray Sultan, president of the Class of 2009 and Glotzbach himself will briefly address the crowd at SPAC.
In his memo Glotzbach gave a brief bio of each of the speakers which I’ve graciously included below.

Carter F. Bales, managing partner emeritus and co-founder, The Wicks Group of Companies, LLC, a private equity firm, as well as community activist for numerous environmental, conservation, cultural and performing arts, and charitable organizations and foundations.

Kati Marton, author and journalist, including reporting for ABC News and National Public Radio, international human rights advocate and former chairwoman of the International Women’s Health Coalition.

Fred Wilson, artist and Luce Distinguished Visiting Fellow for the Program in Object Exhibition and Knowledge at Skidmore’s Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, serving from 2004–06 as a catalyst for faculty engagement with museums.

There you have it folks, Commencement ’09. For more information you can check out (forward to your parents) the handy dandy Commencement 2009 page on the Skidmore homepage.

Love is Fierce as Death. Monday 7pm

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009
Dr. Zohar Raviv

Dr. Zohar Raviv

Monday Dr. Zohar Raviv will be on campus giving a lecture titled “Love is Fierce as Death”; Gravestones as the Landscape of Eros in Sixteenth Century Mysticism.
From the event description:

“The Jewish mystics of Sixteenth century Safed (Palestine) are renowned for the elaborate, impassioned, and eroticized rituals they developed. While Judaism has continually focused on ritual practice, the Safed School kabbalists drew upon canonical Jewish texts and upon the kabbalah of the thirteenth century, and even more, on their own experience to innovate new rituals aimed at achieving spirit possession, prophecy, and ultimately at bringing the messianic age. The landscape of Safed was crucial to this. Thirteenth century mystical texts such as the Zohar were set in this landscape, and the man they considered its author was buried there. So their rituals were aimed at creating an intimate connection with this sacred textual landscape, and with those that lived there in the past. These rituals are distinct from others because of their overt eroticism, their focus on the landscape of Safed, and their performance on the gravestones of departed kabbalistic saints. Come to this talk to find out how sex with gravestones could save the world.”

Jewish mystics, eroticism, Madonna’s religion and graveyards—sounds pretty great to me. In the meantime check out Dr. Raviv’s bloggy blog.

F.A.T’s Oscar Party Blowout

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Sarah Dandlin, Executive Chair of Film Appreciation Troupe’s (F.A.T) Email Communications Department, wrote in to give us the heads up on F.A.T’s Oscar party this Sunday in the Spa. Hollywood is all-abuzz like a High Schooler at a homecoming dance about who is going to win that naked gold action figure and F.A.T invites you to be there to see the whole thing unfold with them.

Sunday night in the Spa while everyone else is crowded around their picture radios join F.A.T, and a huge screen, in the Spa for Hollywood approved snacks like cheese, dried fruit, sparkling juice. Rumor has it there will be prizes, a red carpet and a whole bunch of other cool junk. BOOOYA.
