A Bright Room Called Day

Friday, February 27th, 2009

A student production of Tony Kushner’s A Bright Room Called Day directed by Alison Schultz ‘09 begins its 7 day run tonight in the black box theater. The play, perfectly set for the blackbox, is set in Germany in 1932 and 1933, and concerns a group of friends caught up in the events of the fall of the Weimar Republic and the rise to power Nazi party. The plot is centered around a woman named Agnes Eggling, a middle-aged actress, and all of the action takes place in her apartment.

University Without Walls Shown The Door

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Today as I silently played with my Blackberry on a Palamountain toilet I overheard two staff members talking about this afternoon’s  meeting where faculty will vote on the future of Skidmore’s University Without Walls program. According to these gentlemen the program is doomed, I’ll spare you the transcript but they made is pretty obvious that the faculty has made up their minds.

UWW is Skidmore’s distance learning program including among its graduates Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry’s fame. It was suggested, in March of last year, that the college terminate the program, which faces six figure financial loss, increased competition and dropping enrollment rates. If my unknowing bathroom informants are correct in predicting the demise of the program the college will allow for a “reasonable period of transition” to let the programs roughly 100 enrolled students finish their degrees.

The termination of the program has brought about some criticism from the students who accuse the college of failing to properly market the program. The college’s decision also ruffles feathers among those looking to abolish the tie between higher education and the luxury of the upper class—a UWW student pays $13,293, compared with $49,266 for traditional students. Today’s meeting does not automatically shutter the program, the Board of Trustees will have final say on the issue in their May meeting.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Survey

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

somewhere in the lovely northwoods

The Eco-Reps and Sustainable Skidmore have put together a survey in a move to quantify the campus’ greenhouse gas emissions. The survey is broken down into two parts, takes only a few minutes and helps the college to establish a baseline emissions number.

After you have finished the survey a link pops up allowing you to enter a raffle for a $10 gift card to Putnam Market, a $10 gift card to Uncommon Grounds and a $5 gift card to Saratoga Coffee Traders. Clicky click here.

Get Money, Get Paid

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Rob Hill ‘09 writes in with an announcement from Inter-Hall Board:

We’re accepting submissions for the Fun Day poster, which should include the name of the event (you know, Fun Day), the date (Saturday, April 25, 2009), and the location (South Park Green). The winning poster designer, as decided by Inter-Hall Board, will receive $100 for their efforts!

Entrants should send their posters to fundayposter@gmail.com no later than Sunday, March 1st. Winner will be announced after spring break.

I’m glad to see Fun Day’s annual debauchery is already on the horizon, I’m also glad to see the opportunity to win 100 dollars. Graphic designers take notice.
