Inauguration Day Feast

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Several weeks ago the napkin comment board at the entrance of the D-Hall caught my attention, someone had taken the time to write out a suggested inauguration day dinner menu using various puns involving the name of our President-elect and his Vice President. Obviously hilarious, the list included, among many others, “Sloppy Joe Bidens” and “Barack  ObamOreo Pizza.”

Michel Levin ’11 tipped us off to Tuesday’s dinner menu where it seems these amusing suggestions have come to fruition. Tuesday, Dining Services will be treating students to ChimichangObamas, ObaMacaroni and Cheese, TomatObama Soup and the special “Baracktail” Pina ColadObama.

Lunch, served before Obama’s inauguration and therefore during the Bush administration will be served cold with a side of anti-intellectualism—if the college can afford it.

SAM 2.0

Monday, January 19th, 2009

The foursome of televisions that once hung in Case has gone the way of the Dodo in favor of a new and improved single screen affectionately dubbed SAM (Skidmore Activities Monitor). Alyssa Chrobuck ’09, from the Leadership Activities Office, explains that the new screen will be legible from across the Burgess seating area and be able to handle video, PowerPoint and individual events flyers. Students looking to promote events can access the screen through the SAM submissions page.

Dr. MLK’s Legacy in the Age of Obama

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Tomorrow marks not only the second straight day of snow, but Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. In observance of this holiday, Skidmore has planned a fun-filled, history-packed day to pay tribute to the King. Starting from 1:30-4pm, the Saratoga Springs Public Library will host a commemorative presentation titled “A New Birth of Freedom,” a famed quotation from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and by no coincidence Obama’s inaugural theme. The trip into town will be serviced by none other than a “Freedom Bus.”

Additional events include:

  • A “light” supper in the Gannett lobby @ 4:30-5pm
  • An excerpt from the documentary Eyes on the Prize with discussion led by an expert panel in Davis Auditorium @ 5-6:30pm
  • A dessert reception fit for MLK himself in the Gannett lobby @ 6:30 pm

The events are free and open to the public, so don’t worry, you can still buy your textbooks.

You Have One New Massage

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Continuing the tradition of being way too nice to us, the SkidShop has arranged for the specialists at Balance In Nature Massage Therapy to be on campus every Friday. Beginning January 23rd the wonder hands of these kind folks can be kneading and shiatsu-ing their way down your spine for a buck a minute. The massages are meant to coincide with the Friday Farmers Market so look for them Fridays from 11-4 on the bottom floor of Case Center.

Google Maps Elopes With CDTA

google maps now offers directions via the CDTA

Transportation darling CDTA—most famous for facilitating hungover breakfast trips across the Capital District—has paired with this cool new search engine called “Google” and added public transportation support to Google Maps.

Cited as “the best” by many scholars Google Maps now offers directions to anywhere in the Capital District via public transportation. Enter your destination just like you do for driving directions, take a second to specify you are taking “public transportation,” click “Get Directions” and the route, transfers, and arrival times of the buses will pop up thanks to Google’s black magic.

More importantly are the mobile capabilities. Because you can access Google Maps from your phone (you do have a smart phone don’t you?) a service like this means you will never again sit outside Mrs. London’s for 30 minutes in a February blizzard because you have no idea when the bus comes.

Rounds Gallery Submissions

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

The new Rounds Gallery, located in the beautiful ResLife office hallway, is having its first opening on February 12th and is looking for submissions.  If you have original, mountable artwork completed during your time at Skidmore, you can submit it for consideration by emailing a digital photo to Nurya Gilbert ’11 at ngilbert@skidmore.edu.

More information here.

Personally I think it would be fantastic for each dorm to have a student curated gallery, I’m just saying.

Arthur Zankel Music Center Edges Forwards

Friday, January 9th, 2009

The crown jewel of the “Skidmore Architecture Movement” and future home of the expanding Skidmore Music Department, the Arthur Zankel Music Center will, hopefully, by the time we return to campus have its facade finished and be undergoing internal construction. In one of his recent “State of the College” speeches President Glotzbach explained that the building was within budget and would not suffer from setbacks due to financial worries. Glotzbach also explained that while the building will be completed and functional by January 2010, the formal celebration and dedication ceremony will have to wait until the completion of the Campus Campaign in October 2010. Skidmore Portfolio has a quick photo tour of the construction some more information.
