“Victories, Valentines, and Vaginas” @ Case Gallery

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

The V-Day campaign is currently accepting artwork submissions for the “Victories, Valentines, and Vaginas” exhibition in Case Gallery, February 12-18.

The show is in conjunction with the global V-Day campaign that seeks to end violence against women and girls. Additional events will take place on campus throughout the month of February, including the Vagina Monologues production in the middle of the month.

This year, the movement is focusing on the women and girls effected in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Students, faculty, employees, females, and males are ALL encouraged to participate in this celebration of women everywhere.

Submit anything you deem appropriate to the movement, the theme of this year, or the celebration of women and non-violence in general.
Artwork can be of any media.

** Please e-mail a description or photograph of the work you are planning to submit to hgilchri@skidmore.edu by February 6. **

Drop off will be Wednesday, February 11.

Lucy’s New Look

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Skidmore seems to have a problem with its websites, which currently are about as useful as livejournal. I personally find them ugly, hard to navigate and impossible to search. The Library’s new LUCY catalogue seems, however, to be a shuffle in the right direction. While it seems to have some trouble with Firefox and personal wireless connections the “next-generation interface” does offer some new useful features. Most noticeable are the addition of tables of contents, summaries and annotations, and cover images; also new in the ability to export items into the (personally untested) REFWORKS citation software.

Visually the site shows a drastic improvement and even boasts a little do-hickey that creates a cloud of topics related to your search for easier navigation. Hopefully this upgrade is the first in a string of online improvements the college is prepared to make.

The new catalogue can be accessed from the library website or at

LateNight StandUP Presents: Dan Boulger

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Tonight the folks from LateNight bring you comedian Dan Boulger and Skidmore’s own Chris Flemming. Boulger, a Boston comedian, has performed on Comedy Central Live at the Gotham and won the Boston Comedy Festival in 2006. Because the Spa is going to be mad chilly on account of there being no heat anywhere on campus the event has been moved to the much nicer (and warmer) Gannett Auditorium.

Tonight 10pm

NOTE THE SPA WILL BE CLOSED TONIGHT (MUNCHIES FROM ESPOS AGAIN DUDE). Click to continue »

Skidmore Grad Nominated For An Oscar

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Skidmore Unofficial is proud to congratulate Scott Hamilton Kennedy ’87 whose documentary “The Garden” has been nominated for an Academy Award.

The Garden chronicles the destruction of Los Angeles’ South Central Farm. Created in the aftermath of the LA riots in 1992, the South Central Farm was the largest urban farm in the U.S. until its destruction in 2006. The Garden follows the farmers as they organize and launch an impassioned public battle to save the farm, documenting their struggle against the city’s backroom deals and exposing underlying issues of money, power, poverty, and race.

Previously Kennedy’s film has won Best Documentary Awards at the American Film Institute’s Silverdocs and Camden International film festivals and has been lauded by the Los Angeles Times as “a potent human drama that serves as a case study in how hardball politics is played and why it is so difficult to take on the system.”

The 81st Oscars air  Sunday, Feb. 22.

The Rev. Dr. Ayvazian and Religious Life on Campus

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

With the current search for a director of the newly renamed “Office of Religious and Spiritual Life”, the college is at a transitional point in its religious identity.

Dr. Ayvazian, an ordained minister who has served as the Dean of Religious Life and Protestant Chaplain at Mount Holyoke will be leading a discussion serving as a springboard for a series of conversations on “Nurturing the Spirit at Skidmore” among members of the Skidmore community; students, faculty and staff. These discussions will take place in the Intercultural Center over a pizza dinner. Thursday January 29 at 5:30, Wednesday February 11 at 5:00 and Thursday, February 26 at 5:30.

Broken Pipe To Cause Cold Saturday

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

bundle up

Seems the weather has finally gotten to the plumbing. According to an email from Kiernan Gordon the campus hot water system is currently experiencing a debilitating leak. Thankfully the situation has not reached a level dire enough to cause the immediate shutdown of campus wide heating, or the hot water system upon which our heating relies. Facilities Services intends to keep both heating and hot water systems fully functional until early Saturday morning (1/24) with the intention of isolating and repairing the leak when all but the hardest partying of the students are sleeping.  According to the email (which I’m sure you got also) excavation to reach the leak will begin Friday along the main sidewalk alongside Rounds Hall and Case Green.

Unfortunately full restoration of the heating and hot water systems is not expected until “late Saturday night,” meaning for a minimum of 12 hours every residence hall, as well as Tisch, Barret, Starbuck, Case and the Tang museum will all be without hot water and heating.

Facilities Services will raise the average temperatures of each of the affected buildings prior to the shutoff in order to buildup a surplus of heat, and pleads that students keep their windows closed to reduce heat loss.
Skidmore Unofficial recommends building a cozy nest out of your unused bedding and finding a cuddle partner. Also we are sure you guys have heard of liquid coats.

The oft-criticized Skidmore News is having its first general meeting of the semester to discuss assignments and story ideas. Meetings are held in the newsroom on the bottom floor of Case Wednesdays at 9pm. Snacks.
