Friday, January 30th, 2009

Housing Lottery numbers for the 2009-2010 academic year were just delivered and while I may be scraping the bottom of the barrel with my number in the high 500′s I’m sure you guys are going to get great numbers. Now is the time to buddy up and make sure you don’t get stuck in some dreadful South Quad dungeon. For the lucky few holding the golden ticket number 1s remember to keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

CHOWDERFEST MOTHERFUCKERS

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

It is time once again for the most glorious celebration of the year: Chowderfest.  In a gluttonous celebration of delicious soups with milk in them, the Saratoga Convention and Tourism Bureau will be hosting this years Chowderfest on Saturday, Jan. 31.  Beginning at 11am over 50 Saratoga restaurants will be offering cups of delicious chowder in celebration of Saratoga’s Winterfest weekend. While you plebeians may be most familiar with chowder’s corn and clam varieties, I have a feeling the downtown culinary crowd won’t be limiting themselves to that weak shit.

After you have filled your stomachs with delicious chowder, served in Al Gore-appeasing biodegradable cups, you are invited to grab a ballot and vote for your favorite recipe. While this whole thing may seem like a Food Network special, I am embarrassingly excited to compare the light airy flavor of Hatties’ chowder to the smokier subtle flavor characteristic of Max London’s.

Each January the Schick Art Gallery hosts a student show displaying work completed over the previous year. This year’s show was juried by artist Michael Oatman, who has selected several student works in a variety of media. Only one third of submissions are typically chosen for exhibit, with upwards of 200 submissions annually. In addition to curating the show Oatman has selected several of the works to receive further praise to be announced at the opening reception.  The Schick Show is particularly important because it gives students a chance to show and possibly sell their work to the larger Saratoga community. The opening reception for the show, which will hang until March 1st, is Thursday (1/29) at 6:30pm.

Memoir and Essay: A Conference on Non-Fiction

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

This Thursday students will have the unique opportunity to attend a panel discussion populated by a fantastic selection of non-fiction writers. Honor Moore, Katha Pollitt, Darryl Pinckney and Phillip Lopate will discuss issues pertaining to the craft of writing non-fiction prose from their respective experience in a discussion moderated by members of the English Department. The critics on the panel are active writers published in: among others, Harper’s Magazine, The New Yorker,  The Nation, The New York Review Of Books and countless literary reviews. An event like this also offers a glimpse into the daily routine during the New York State Summer Writers Institute operating on campus during the summer. The discussion begins Thursday (1/29) at 7pm in Gannett Auditorium and is open to the public.

School’s Out for Snow Day

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

As many of you already know, all normal school functions after 2 pm today have been suspended due to the white powdery substance falling from above. Unfortunately, the Library will also be closing its doors around 6 p.m., so instead of doing homework, it’s time for a nap. The school will reopen at 6 am Thursday morning. Enjoy the afternoon.

Check out the campus’ snow hotline for more info: 518-580-SNOW.

Snowball fight, anyone?
