Super Smash Bros Before Hoes

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

College is hard, sometimes there just isn’t enough time “to like totally PWN the shit out of your bros in Super Smash.” Fear not, there is a light at the end of this tunnel of reality. If you like video games—or if you just like smashing your thumbs against things as if they were a freshman waif at a Girl Talk concert—have we got news for you: December 6th at 3pm in Bolton 103 there will be a Super Smash Bros. Tournament with CASH PRIZES and more importantly bragging rights. There is a cute little Facebook group with all the info making the news-feed rounds as we speak, but you guys can skip the line and just check it out here.

More On Skidmore Unplugged

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Remember back when we got our undies in a bundle over who was going to win Skidmore Unplugged? Well, we recently received an email from Christopher Sacca ’09 who helped design and code the website. This is what we learned:

The Skidmore Unplugged contest ended Nov. 22nd and it looks like Howe-Rounds remains victorious (barring any sabotage scandal). Now these nifty little monitors that they hooked up to the dorms this year are still collecting data and feeding it into the sustainability dashboard (that’s a fancy name for website), so you can check in any time and see how the dorms are doing. What those monitors do is “measure the cumulative percent increase or decrease from a baseline for each of the dorms’ energy consumption.”  For all you English majors out there that means that the site measures if the percentage of energy used has increased or decreased from an already established norm (the baseline). The baselines were established by taking the total energy usage from each individual dorm each hour and stringing it together to make a week long model, with information for every hour of every day. The point being that you use more electricity on a Wednesday afternoon than you do on Sunday at 5am. This means that any concern over the energy consumption of the Tower elevator or Health Services acting as a handicap in the competition is unfounded because their existence is already accounted for in the baseline.

At the moment the site is still accumulating data from the monitors and will continue to do so—that’s why is may seem like the contest is still going on. We aren’t sure why everyone (i.e whoever runs this contest) is being so tight lipped, but the winner will be announced at the Mr. Skidmore competition Thursday at 8pm in the Spa. Sustainable Skidmore is going to continue to collect our energy usage data, and hopefully in the future will publish it through something like these nifty interfaces for Hamilton and Oberlin.

Millhauser Does it Again

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Today’s New York Times featured the “Top 10 Best Books of 2008.” At the top of the list: Dangerous Laughter: Thirteen Stories by none other than Skidmore professor/celebrity Steven “The Illusionist” Millhauser.

In his first collection in five years, a master fabulist in the tradition of Poe and Nabokov invents spookily plausible parallel universes in which the deepest human emotions and yearnings are transformed into their monstrous opposites. Millhauser is especially attuned to the purgatory of adolescence. In the title story, teenagers attend sinister “laugh parties”; in another, a mysteriously afflicted girl hides in the darkness of her attic bedroom. Time and again these parables revive the possibility that “under this world there is another, waiting to be born.”

An excerpt from his book is available on the Times’ website. Although this is just one of many appearances in the Times for Dr. Millhauser, be sure to congratulate him on his timeless work.

Junior Ring EXTRAVAGANZA!!!1!

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

There’s nothing like coming back to campus from home with your family and friends to deal with term papers and sanctions issued by Res Life for having too many chairs, a coffee pot, beer bottles, and a disassembled bed in your room (…damn). That’s why this weekend is the perfect time to put off work and party like it’s 1920 at the Class of 2010′s “Junior Ring.” There will be events all weekend, and a semi-formal dance Friday night from 11-3am. Looks like this year’s theme is going to be the roaring twenties, so all you Gatsby’s out there can finally make your move on your Daisy’s. Since it was during the twenties that jazz music gained its popularity, we can’t make any assumptions as to whether the DJ will be playing Weezy or Dizzy (Gillespie), but in the spirit of the twenties, your request for scat music will probably be granted.

Stop by the SGA booth in Case now through Friday between 12-4pm for $3 tickets (they take the Skid ID YAY!) or buy $5 tix at the door. Remember that if you’re over 21 and want to get your drink on at the dance you need to get a campus event card—two IDs are now required for a drink. The drinks are quite steep: $4 per dose.

The complete schedule for this weekend’s festivities after the jump…
