Santy Meets Lena

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Buried in the depths of Brooklyn Phila St. rests Caffe Lena, the “Best Small Venue in North America” according to the International Folk Alliance. Located next to Hattie’s (whose chicken is da bomb!), this venue caters to Skidmores’ musicians, as it often supports acts from small Jazz ensembles and more. This Wednesday, Lena’s EMERGING ARTIST BREAKOUT#$!@% will feature Skidmore student Luke Santy accompanied by Julia Ilowieck, who according to Facebook, did/does not go to Skidmark.

Where: Caffe Lena (47 Phila Street)
When: Wednesday, Dec 10th @ 7-8pm
How: Take the bus

Pulse & Friends Play One More Time

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Remember Stomp, that percussion troupe that probably got its start begging for food while banging on pots and pans? Well after a series of economic-crisis-caused lootings at Williams-Sonoma, Skidmore’s own Pulse is ready to play their last show of the semester. Two other groups, Stompin’ Soles and Skidaiko, will be joining the “fiesta.”

Instead of making that 4th trip to Burgess for coffee, run on up to Falstaff’s from 8-9pm tonight for some rhythm and blues.

Free Expensive Stuff

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

I’m not sure how many of you spend your evenings checking the Skidmore Shop blog, but if you do you may have noticed that their blogger-in-residence has been playing hype man for some big event at the store on December 10th. From what my low level journalism skills gathered the shop is going to give away a free Macbook laptop and have some sort of mind blowing sale. And according to today’s update over at skidmoreshop.blogspot.com I was correct.

Today’s update explains that The Shop is going to be raffling off one black Macbook at 5pm tomorrow in the Spa. In addition to kindly throwing their most expensive overstock to the masses, the store will be having a Holiday sale with some sort of mythical “Wheel of Discount.” So tomorrow make your way over to the Skidmore Shop and spend some of your parents money on gifts for you parents. We just hope no one gets trampled.

More details here.

No More Secrets After Tomorrow

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Take a break from memorizing French verbs, or whatever, and stretch your memory back to when we told you about the Center For Sex and Gender Relation’s PostSecret, and well, the deadline for submissions is tomorrow. Inspired by the Secrets threat on the ACB and the PostSecret blog, the idea is to decorate a postcard with one of your juiciest secrets  and send it anonymously to The CSGR. A show curated by The Center with some of the endearing, awkward, depressing submissions goes up in Case Gallery on the 11th at 9pm.  Food will be served.

Also tomorrow, there will a Bias Response Open Dialogue for you to talk about those infamous bias incidents that occured on campus this semester. Stop by Gannett at 7:30pm for some good ol’ chit-chat.

Jazz Ensemble Concert

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Do you like jazz music? Do you like pretending to like jazz music to impress girls? If you answered yes to either one of those two questions you will be excited to know that the Skidmore Jazz Ensemble will be giving its Winter Concert tonight at 8pm in Filene. According to TheFacebook you can expect to hear, among others, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Take The A Train,” and “Agua De Beber.”  Make sure you Wikipedia them first so you’re prepared to talk about them with that girl from your English class.

A Beautiful Tragedy

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Remember in Middle School when your idea of tragedy was doing something embarrassing in front of Isabelle Geller? It is my informed academic assumption that Greek tragedies are nothing like that. I can’t say for sure though.  The local experts on tragedy will be giving a crash course with Niobe—an original student play written in the style of an Athenian tragedy. Written, acted in, produced, and directed by the Classic’s Department’s CC-222 Greek Tragedy class the play is said to contain tons of tragic stuff like masks, a chorus, gods, etc. ONE NIGHT ONLY BABY.

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

The EAC writes:

WANT TO GO TO WASHINGTON? From February 27th to March 2nd thousands of young adults will converge on Washington, D.C. for Power Shift 2009, the second national youth summit to solve the climate crisis. Subjects include environmental and social justice, faith and the environment, running local and national campaigns, cultivating leadership skills, direct action, and a lot more. The trip is organized by EAC and sponsored by the Government Department, so you know it’s kosher! To learn more about what Power Shift is about, go to powershift07.org to watch videos about last year’s summit or powershift09.org to preview 2009′s summit.

Deerhunter On Campus February 7th

Friday, December 5th, 2008

While tonight it will host levels of debauchery that would make any flapper blush, the Small Gym is in for quite a treat February 7th when it will host a Deerhunter concert sponsored by SEC.  The show, which was announced today, does not yet have a slated opener.  The show will begin a season of shows from SEC who, rumor has it, is flush with cash after the success of September’s Girl Talk show.

SEC meets Mondays at 8pm in Ladd 307

It’s Official: Howe-Rounds is Champion

Friday, December 5th, 2008

After a back and forth of who would be crowned victor of Skidmore Unplugged, we are pleased to announce Howe-Rounds as the most energy efficient dorm on campus. Similarly, we would also like to award Howe-Rounds as the “Most Confusing Dorm” on campus. While people insist on it being two separate dorms, its energy usage continues to be displayed as one. In the spirit of continued energy conservation, perhaps a contest amongst academic buildings is in order: Tisch vs. Bolton-Palamountain-Dana-Harder (and I guess Ladd). Get ready for a blood bath.

Let our previous post ring far and loud…

We’re not sure why we haven’t received a barrage of campus wide emails announcing the winner yet, but Skidmore Unplugged ended 2 days ago and Howe-Rounds is the clear victor. Maybe the tight lips have something to do with accusations of sabotage we’ve heard rumor of.

Congratulations, Photo Takers

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Gather ’round folks, the results for the CTM photo contest are in. After several hundred rolls of film, and a record total of 329 entries (thanks to the internet “upload”), four photos were chosen to represent this college in all its photo glory (I suppose). If you can remember, there were four categories from which a different picture was chosen. Here are the respective winners:

Best in Show: Lucy Senesac ‘09’s “Patriotic Surfaces”
Skidmore Life: David Mishler ’09’s “Frank 1”
Anything Goes: Jon Dorn ’09’s “Schuylerville Sunrise—mid-Drive to a Skidmore News cover photo shoot”
Kid’s People’s Choice Award: Chris Weigl ’11’s “Ethereal”

Skidmore Unofficial would like to congratulate all of the winners. Your college just paid your cover charge to MARE.
