OWA Down For The Count

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Does anybody know anything about the “emergency maintenance” being done to the email server this evening? Michelle Osgood the “Windows Systems Administrator” just sent out a nice little campus wide email saying the server will be taken down at 5pm. Hopefully its something exciting, I’m getting tired of blogging about presidential debates.

This Land is Harland

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Hailed as one of the top drummers of our generation, Eric “Hercules” Harland will be on campus today and tomorrow hosting a slew of master classes, as well as putting on a concert. Harland is a part of what’s considered an all-star jazz ensemble, the SFJAZZ Collective, but will instead be playing in a quartet along side 2-time Grammy nominee pianist Taylor Eigsti, guitarist Julian Lage, and bassist Harish Raghavan. Tomorrow’s jazz super-show will take place in the Filene Recital hall, beginning around 8pm and lasting until roughly 10pm, depending on how long it takes you stoners to find your way to your seats. The show will cost a small, yet unfortunate $2 for students (and senior citizens), so don’t be afraid to steal some Saratoga Elementary student’s lunch money if need be.

The Filene Concert Series has brought in many notable acts in contemporary Jazz including Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter, and John Scofield.

Debate III: Ayers of Confidence

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

The third and final presidential debate is scheduled for 9 pm tonight. Will Gentleman Johnny take the gloves off and bring up kinda-former-terrorist-but-nowadays-respected-Chicago-civic-leader Bill Ayers? How obvious will it be that Obama is just trying to run out the clock? Just what the hell is ACORN, anyways? For the (undoubtedly canned) answers to these questions and more, head by the Spa and check it out.

(But probably just get a couple of 40s, some buddies, and watch it in your room while listening closely for the phrases “maverick,” “change,” “last eight years” and “my friends.”)

Delillo On Campus Tonight

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

As our crack team of corespondents previously reported, Don DeLillo will be giving the annual Steloff Lecture here on campus. DeLillo will be reading fiction, fielding questions and signing books this very evening in Gannett at 8pm. DeLillo has been hailed as one of the greatest writers of our time, with The New York Review of Books calling him “one of the most original, intelligent, and visionary novelists now writing in America.” Skidmore’s annual Steloff Lecture was established in 1967 by Frances Steloff, a native of Saratoga Springs who became a well-known patron of writers and founded the Gotham Book Mart in New York City. She endowed the series as a way to bring outstanding literary and artistic talent to the college. Previous Steloff speakers include Nadine Gordimer, Seamus Heaney, J.M. Coetzee, Saul Bellow, Mario Vargas Llosa, Katharine Anne Porter, Louise Gluck, Chinua Achebe, Susan Sontag, and Arthur Miller.

Dick Cheney Not Invited

Monday, October 13th, 2008

At this point you have probably spent the previous five weeks laboriously building for yourself a wholesome reputation; a reputation whose good points will hopefully be shattered in The Hunt. The Hunt, which can only be described as “much more than a scavenger hunt,” is put on by an anonymous group and usually involves exciting levels of debauchery, or at least weirdness. The actual Hunt isn’t for a while now, but there is an interest meeting on Thursday at 7pm in Bolton 281.

Here is what you have to do: find four of five people you like (e.g., your friends), take these people and form a “team”, send at least one representative from this team to the aforementioned meeting with a team name and 5 bucks per person. More details will be given at the meeting but there is a 40 team limit so be diligent.

Celebrate Free Shirt 5k

Monday, October 13th, 2008

It’s just fact that running to class–and from cops–doesn’t burn off all the chicken patties in D-Hall, nor does it contribute to a good cause. This Sunday, do something good with some students/faculty/parents/dogs and go for a light run/jog/walk around campus on this year’s Celebration Weekend 5K. The first 100 entrants will get a sweet new shirt to wear on their casual workouts they begin after this weekend after they realize how out of shape they actually are. For those Olympians among us, the top 3 contenders in 6 different divisions will receive a monumental trophy made of pure gold (or plastic). Don’t forget to register and email Gove Effinger (effinger@skidmore.edu) if you have any questions, and remember: donations of $5 are recommended and will benefit Saratoga Thanksgiving.

What: Celebration 5k Run-Walk
