Down the Middle (School)

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Miss middle school? Sure you do. After all, braces and school bus rides are some of our most fond memories. Anyways, Skidmore student Jeremy Cone ’09 is producing a new musical tribute to your favorite middle school memories and all of those prepubescent crushes in a musical called “Down the Middle.” We’re thinking “Degrassi” meets “Mean Girls” with a dab of “Lion King” for some of that musical influence, however with a lot less “Hakuna Matata” and a lot more worries.

When: Friday @ 8pm & Saturday @ 2pm and 8pm

Where: Dance Theatre (somewhere near the gym)

Somehow, the crack research team over here at Unofficial has gotten their hands on a description of the musical by “Down the Middle” star Zubin Mobedshahi… Click to continue »

Glotzbach Speaks

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Buried deep in the bowels of this week’s “student announcement digest” there shines a brief letter from the desk of president Glotzbach. The Ol’ Captain himself will be giving two college updates this week focusing “on the current economic situation and the challenges it presents to us personally and to the College as a whole.“  Think of them as mini state of the union addresses but with less clapping.  Interested? October 22 at 1pm in Davis or Thursday, October 23, at 11am in Gannett.

p.s. We will be there so you don’t have to be. Maybe we’ll even liveblog it or something goofy like that (but probably not).

EAC’s Letter to Students Weighs Candidates

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Attention Students,

So we know it’s kinda under the radar, but there’s an election coming up. In case you missed it, the results are in: the economy’s in the shitter. Our economic potential, however, is now more closely tied to our environmental policy than ever, with renewable energy and other green firms being some of the few areas still growing under the current crunch.

So while we know you’ll all be voting (CASE CENTER, NOV 4th!!!!) with your stocks and student loans on your mind, remember that the renewable energy, cleaner cars, and the carbon markets are sectors for GROWTH, JOBS and INNOVATION, representing a sustainable way to salvage our economy.

Shit in the Food

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Every year at Thanksgiving my dad tells this hilarious story about getting food poisoning at a Cracker Barrel in Texas: that story is probably the only positive thing to come out of food poisoning. While I’m sure my Father would have been happy to drive up for the event, tonight’s lecture focuses on some of the more serious aspects of food borne illness. The panel features SGA vice president Alyssa Chrobuck ’09, who will be talking about her experience as a survivor of E.coli, as well as representatives from Safe Tables Our Priority, Skidmore Nutrition Action Council, and Mark Miller of Dining Services.  Bringing together students, faculty and professionals to talk about food poisoning both on campus and in the larger community the panel aims to offer—in the words of Chorobuck—“a general understanding of what food-borne illness is, how to eat safely, and also to understand the gravity of the situation.” The panel begins at 8pm in Davis with a Q&A following.

Fiddy and Barack

Monday, October 20th, 2008

It’s that time of year again! Wait, no. It’s not time for DMX’s annual incarceration, it’s Hip Hop Alliance’s Hip Hop Culture Week.

Over the next several days Hip Hop Alliance will be curating a series of campus events, beginning tonight with a screening and discussion of the short film “Barack and Curtis: Manhood, Power and Respect.”

The short film (we’re talking under 15 minutes here, folks) from director Bryon Hurt considers the examples of black masculinity put forward by both Barack Obama (of presidential candidate fame) and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (of Wanksta fame). After a quick screening the floor will open up for breakdancing discussion of the film and its ideas. Kickoff is at 7pm in Bolton 282.

No Glove, No Love

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

So this Wednesday, Oct. 22, the Center for Sex & Gender Relations is hosting another one of Skidmore’s most glorified events. No, we are not talking about Fun Day, OktSoberfest, or any amateur shit like that, we’re talking about Free Condom Day. Due to the great success of the first Free Condom Day, noted by the absence of little babies and syphilis around campus, and the surprising surplus of glow-in-the-dark condoms, the Center has decided to unleash another wave of dome caps onto us students. Going to the Center is a great idea because it avoids playing with any of the potentially sabotaged willy wraps, as well as providing a number of other resources and fun facts. Keep up the good work students, and remember, no glove, no love.

Spring Semester Class Schedule Available

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

While you guys were trying to decide where to have your parents take you to dinner tonight (we recommend Hattie’s), the registrar sent out enrollment timeslots and posted the master schedule. Let the timeslot complaints begin. Educate yourselves here.

Skidnews Not Into Sexy Questions

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

I’m not trying to start a journalism war or anything but a concerned tipster sent us an email today about how Skidnews refused to run the weekly “Ask the Sex-perts” column this year. Apparently, in the past, the Center For Sex and Gender Relations had written a column that would research and answer student submitted questions which had previously stumped the Center’s staffers. Anyhoo, Skidnews has supposedly declined to run the column this year citing its non-pertinence. I’m no Tom Brokaw but wouldn’t the fact that those questions were student submitted make them pretty pertinent? So what do you think folks? Skidnews, any comments?
