Trick or Treat

Friday, October 31st, 2008

According to our calculations it has been about 300 years since Halloween has fallen on a decent party day but remember, just because you don’t have class tomorrow doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have class tonight. According to the internet if we do bad things tonight the college will take away other things we enjoy like Junior Ring and Fun Day which would be a bummer. Moorebid starts at 10pm and there is a costume contest at 11 with glamorous prizes so make sure you look hella fly in your costume or that girl from phsyics is going unimpressed. All of Case Center is decorated all spooky and shit so get your costumes on and get ready. Keep it safe.

Skidmore College Board Gets New Chair

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Whitman and Thomas

While the rest of us were sleeping off the Mare costume contest, the Skidmore College Board was meeting on the second floor of D-Hall to celebrate the passing of the gavel to a new board Chair.  Former Board Chair Suzanne Thomas ’62 handed over the position to Janet Whitman ’59 who read a resolution acknowledging her “deep admiration and respect” for Thomas’s work at the College. Thomas had previously held many positions here at Skidmore including 1962 Class Secretary, Chair of the Friends of the Presidents Committee, Chair of the National Leadership Gifts Committee for the Journey Campaign, member of the Tang Advisory Committee, and numerous other volunteer positions. Skidmore had also previously honored her with an Outstanding Service Award in 2002.

Whitman, who is the former mayor of Summit N.J., has served on the Skidmore College Board since 1994 and been chair, vice-chair, and member of numerous Board committees which worked to assist the college on such issues as infrastructure, budget and finance, compensation, special programs, trusteeship, strategic planning, academic affairs, and advancement, as well as the search committee that brought Glotzbach to the College in 2003.

Moorebid Ball NOT CANCELED

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Just like in Mean Girls it seems rumors have run rampant around campus. Just to clear things up, in case the 5 emails you probably received didn’t do it, Moorebid Ball is not canceled.

Anything But Clothes

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

I know most of you are probably still trying to figure out what you are going be for Halloween, and I hate to burden you with the pressure of another costume, but the Rithmos are throwing an “Anything But Clothes” party at Falstaff”s this Saturday. While I know most of us feel more comfortable wearing our best striped shirts or the newest dress from anthropologie on Saturday nights we can leave those lady killers in the closet this weekend. Want to hide your junk inside an old Keystone box? Go ahead. Think you can fashion a bra out d-hall plates? More power to you. I for one am proud that campus clubs have begun pushing the “Creative Thought Matters” mantra, I’m sure nowhere will our creative sides shine through more than in methods we use to cover our genitalia; but should we be worried that other colleges are pushing the envelope further?

Barack and the Future of American Racial Politics

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Tomorrow night at 8pm the chair of the political science department at UPenn, Rogers Smith, will be on campus giving the annual Ronald J. Fiscus Lecture in Constitutional Law. Smith’s lecture entitled “Barack Obama and the Future of American Racial Politics” will focus on Barack Obama and the future of american racial politics.

Want to impress this UPenn hotshot with your knowledge of American racial politics but feel underprepared? check out some of his writing.

SYRA: Rich Lowry for Skidmore

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Following such memorable speakers as Harvey Mansfield, who spoke about “Manliness,” and John Ashcroft, the only person on campus to ever confuse Barack Obama for Osama bin Laden, the Skidmore Young Republican Assembly (yeah…they’re a thing) will present this year’s first speaker, Richard Lowry, this Wednesday.

Don’t know Dick? Well, he has been the editor of “America’s most widely read and influential magazine and web site for Republican/conservative news, commentary, and opinion,” the National Review, since 1997. As a frequent guest on Fox News, as well as author of an Anti-Clinton book Legacy: Paying the Price for the Clinton Years, it should be no surprise when Lowry states his endorsement of McCain, nevermind his support for waterboarding. Keep in mind, this guy is famous. No big deal, but he is currently ranked as Keith Olbermann’s “Worst Person in the World.”

Show up prepared to hear some genuine, “out-of-the-box” conservative agenda that your socially liberal mind hasn’t been exposed to since you’ve arrived back in our 900-acre “Obama bubble.” Rich Lowry will speak on Wednesday, Oct. 29, in Gannett Auditorium @ 8:30pm.

Moooorebid is Coming…

Monday, October 27th, 2008

For those of you who haven’t already decided to go as a “college student,” or as an attractive Sarah Palin, put that “Creative Thought Matters”  mantra to the test and think of something before all Wal-Mart has left is this. Moorebid Ball is this weekend—Friday (Halloween) night to be exact—and there will be a costume contest at 11pm where the winner will receive a glorious prize. This year, all of Case is fair game. Lightsaber fights shall have temporary free reign over the entire student center, but all pod-racers and other weird big things should be kept outside.

Genius Bar Open For Non-Geniuses

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Thanks to the smart folks at the Skidmore Store an Apple Genius now comes to campus twice a week to fix these pieces of plastic we are practically married to. If your Mac computer is malfunctioning, or you have some questions, bring it in to the shop Tuesdays from 12-3 or Thursdays from 2-5 and this guy who knows more about computers than you do about your crush’s facebook interests will fix it. Simple as that.

p.s. look how hip everyone in that photo (taken from the Apple website) looks. Even if your computer isn’t broken maybe you should stop by the shop to talk about electronic remixes of Arcade Fire songs with this guy or something.

Shades of Grey

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Tonight at 7pm in Gannett campus heavy hitters Academic Council and The Honors Forum present a faculty panel on the politics of environmental and energy concerns. This panel offers a great opportunity to take a look at current and future economic policy without the circular rhetoric of political debates. Faculty panelist include economics professor Roxanna Julia, who will be talking about energy policy and global warming, Chemistry professor Bob Winkler, will be talking about the future of Ethanol as a fuel, and Bob Turner from the Govt. Dept. addressing environmental issues in Washington, DC. This event is part of the Honor Forum’s yearly Shades of Grey panel series where “controversial” issues are brought to the campus for discussion. And while not hard hitting on the controversy front, environmental issues have become a hot topic this election season.

But, this little ditty of a panel is just a warm up, on Wednesday at 5:30 in Gannett a rare student panel will address the question “Who owns your vote & what is it worth?” Moderated by Professor Bob Turner the talk will begin with the screening of clips from the film 18 in ’08 and focus around the idea of student and youth participation in voting and other democratic shit. We think its only fitting that after 8 weeks of hearing some geezers talk about how important it is too vote the college finally sat down some students and got talking.

So make sure to mosey over to both these important discussions, if only for the vegetable platters served after.
