EP Review – CAMPO’s “Fifty Seven”

Saturday, March 4th, 2017

Small but mighty “Campo” has been on the Skidmore music scene for a couple of years now. Whether you’re an OG Fangirl, or you just found out that they’re not the ones who confiscated your bong from your room that one time, you probably know that they dropped their first EP today on Bandcamp! If you haven’t heard, it is definitely worth a listen. Emie and Ethan’s etherial voices mix with Paul and Neale’s bomb guitar skills on top of Stolman’s soulful drum beats that make you want to relive your pulse rejection all over again. Campo features a smooth indie-rock aesthetic both visually and auditory, perfect for off-campus basement jamming  If you’re into it check them out live this Friday at Putnam Den with Skidmore legends, Los Elk.

Skidmore Theater Department Presents: Friends Reception & After Party

Wednesday, April 15th, 2015
Anyone remember Panic! at the Disco's second album? This poster reminds me of that.

Anyone remember Panic at the Disco’s second album?

This Saturday, April 18th at 9:30pm in the JKB Theater, Skidmore College Theater will host its annual friends reception and after party to celebrate their donors and patrons, as well as their past season and the work they’ve been doing in the JKB.

Following the 8pm performance of Blood Wedding, there will be a circus-themed reception/party in the JKB lobby–featuring a photo booth, free food/drinks catered by Putnam Market, and exhibitions of “students’ hidden talents and rare oddities on spectacular display.” Party admission is free, but if you present your ticket for the 8pm Blood Wedding performance, you get a free raffle ticket. Wow!

In addition, there will also be performances in the black box by Hardy? (formerly known as The Hardy Boys) and The Salmon of Knowledge.

Cabaret Troupe Presents: ‘Urinetown’ (4/2-4/4)

Thursday, April 2nd, 2015

Dope logo.

Tonight, April 2nd, Cabaret Troupe will premiere their production of Mark Hollmann’s Urinetown, which will run until this Sunday, April 4th.

A Tony-Award-winning musical, Urinetown takes place in a society where corporate control has made it “a privilege to pee.” “Urinetown raises the question of how to properly respond to a crisis,” says director Cal Lane ’16. “While it may seem like none of the characters know what they’re doing, they are not stupid. In fact they are so motivated by a singular passion that they simply can’t see anyone else’s viewpoint.”

Performances are this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 9April 2-4) all at 7pm in Filene Auditorium. The show is entirely free and student-run. It looks like Cab Troupe’s really come a long way since their legendarily atrocious production of Cabaret, so be sure to stop by and check out the show.

FAN Presents: ‘The Feminist Monologues’ (3/28 & 3/29)

Monday, March 23rd, 2015

Poster design by Aria Goodman.

This Saturday (3/28) and Sunday (3/29) in Wilson Chapel, members of the Feminist Action Network (FAN) will be presenting The Feminist Monologues, an original production based on stories written by Skidmore students and directed by Clara Moser, Mariah Guevin, and Isabella León-Chambers.

For many years now, FAN has annually produced and sponsored a production of The Vagina Monologues— as have many colleges across the country. This year, however, they decided to do something entirely different by holding an open call for stories from Skidmore students about their experiences with “feminism, femininity, womanhood, and the female body.” From these submissions, several stories, monologues, and poems were selected, the show was cast, and you can see the final phase of the process this upcomming weekend:

This year we bring you monologues and poems, written and performed by Skidmore students themselves.
These are our own stories about feminism, sexuality, body image, womanhood, self-love, and survival.
These are our truths.
And we want you to hear them.

There will be three performances–two on Saturday at 2:00pm and 8pm, and one on Sunday at 2:00pm–in Wilson Chapel. There is a suggested $5 donation at the door, the proceeds of which will go to Wellspring (formerly known as Saratoga DVRC) and GEMS: Girls Educational & Mentoring Services. Reservations can be made in the Atrium, where members of FAN will be ticket tabling Wednesday from 11-7pm, Thursday from 2-7pm, and Friday from 2-5pm.

The Sketchies Present: Sweet Sixteen Alumni Show

Friday, February 27th, 2015

Blow out your candle, Sketchies.

Did you know that The Sketchies are 16-years old? I doubt it. But like all 16-year-olds, they want you to know about it. To commemorate the landmark anniversary of the club, they’ll be holding a show tomorrow night in Gannett, featuring performances from current and former Sketchies alike.

You can check out the full list of returning alumni on the Facebook event page. They seem to range from very-recently-graduated to old-enough-that-I-can’t-find-any-mention-of-their-relation-to-Skidmore-on-the-Internet. Sadly, it doesn’t appear that Chris Fleming (who you might have seen on this Super Bowl commercial) will be in attendance. But it’s worth noting that the show will feature Michael Zegen, who you might (or might not) know from The Walking Dead, Rescue Me, or Girls. So that will be pretty cool. Maybe he’ll give you an autograph! (Don’t ask him for an autograph. He’s just a person who wants to live his life.)

Show starts at 10:30pm in Gannett. Maybe go there from the Ad-Libs Newbie Show and make it a night of laughs?
