Offices in Starbuck Center Relocated Over Health Fears

Written by Rowley on January 26th, 2012

Yesterday, President Glotzbach and Dean of Student Affairs Rochelle Calhoun informed the student body of an ongoing health scare in Starbuck Center. According to the emails, fifty employees working in Starbuck are in the process of being moved to other locations on campus “until we have a clear understanding of the situation.

It is unclear what, exactly, is happening in Starbuck, as President Glotzbach did not reveal any specifics. However, it seems pretty serious if the College has chosen to completely relocate offices and retain the services of an industrial hygienist.

Those with questions or concerns have been advised to contact Human Resources at 580-5804. Upon calling that number, I was transferred to Health Services. My conversation with a representative was brief, with requests for information answered with a succinct response revealing nothing of import. Given the precarious legal nature of this situation, it’s likely that the Administration will keep relatively quiet until more is known.

Updates will be forthcoming.

UPDATE: The changes, according to Rochelle Calhoun, are as follows:

  • Office of Academic Advising, Registrar and Student Academic Services will be re-located to the fourth floor of Palamountain.
  • Bursar, Card Services and Student Financial Aid will be re-located to the second floor of Palamountain.
  • Career Services, First Year Experience and Off-Campus Study and Exchange will be re-located to Case Center.

An unusual number of faculty/staff members in the building have reported new cases of breast cancer discovered since working there. Also, many asthma related illnesses have come about. They think there might be a link between these cases and something in the building.
