SGA Voting, Candidates and Proposed Amendment

Written by Executive Editor on April 23rd, 2009

Yesterday on my way into D-Hall I was surprised to see another table set up for SGA voting. After a quick email exchange with SGA policy analyst Annie Bruckner ’11 I’ve learned quite a bit. Turns out SGA splits voting into 3 rounds. The 3rd round of voting began yesterday at noon and runs through Friday, vote online HERE.

The first is to fill in vacant positions from the end of the fall semester/beginning of the spring semester (some people resign or go abroad).  The second is for all the executive committee positions (SGA President, SGA Vice Presidents) and hall council positions (Presidents and Vice Presidents).  The third is for senators-at-large, class council positions, Speakers Bureau Chair, Traditions Chair, and any vacant positions.

SGA divides the elections for next year’s governing body into two rounds to give those who run for Executive Committee a chance to run for class council positions, which are part of Executive Board.

Keep reading for a list of candidates and a quick explanation of the proposed SGA constitutional amendment.

SGA’s proposed constitutional amendment streamlines the constitution, reducing it from a superfluous 26 to a more concise 13 pages, updates a lot of the outdated language and fixes minor grammatical and spelling errors. In addition the amendment clarifies the definition of SGA membership (it used to be “all full-time matriculated and full-time non-matriculated students”; now it’s all Skidmore College students (except for UWW, MALS, and part-time students who live off-campus) who pay the Student Activity Fee.  The Amendment also adds an Interclass Council Chair to the Executive Committee and merged the VP for Communications, Willingness-to-Serve Chair, and Elections Chair.  The entire document looks to be a well thought-out and an overall helpful policy change.
