Skidmore’s annual Beatles tribute concert for charity, Beatlemore Skidmania, is right around the corner. For the uninitiated, Beatlemore is the brain child of music professor and “Beatles scholar” Gordon Thompson. It’s three nights of Beatles music reinvented by Skidmore musicians who audition for slots in the show. Here’s what they have to say:
Featuring talented student groups who audition with reinterpreted Beatles’ classics in extraordinarily inventive ways, Beatlemore Skidmania was launched just weeks after 9/11 when a group of students in Skidmore music Professor Gordon Thompson’s Beatles seminar course staged a Beatles tribute concert in an effort to lift their spirits.
The show has evolved into a major event that brings together the Skidmore and Saratoga communities and has invariably sold out in recent years. Proceeds from the sale of tickets, T-shirts, and posters will go toward Skidmore Cares, a program established by the college in 2006 to help area residents in need through donations of food and money to local food pantries and other non-profit organizations.
So there you have it. Good music coming from Skidmore kids helping to raise money for a good cause. The shows are Friday 11/22 @ 8pm, Saturday 11/23 @ 2pm, and Saturday 11/23 @ 8pm. The Saturday night show is only for students. That’s the one you want to go to. Pick up your tickets at the Zankel box office, the only place you can get them for the student-only show. Or if you’re a lazy schlub that can’t walk through the Arts Quad, you can get tickets here.
If you want to audition, video submissions run from October 1 to October 10. E-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to get placed on the listserv disseminating information about how to submit your video. Also be aware that these are the only songs you can do at this year’s show. The theme is 1963, the same year Beatlemania was declared in England or some bullshit like that. So get creative. Last year 32 groups auditioned for only 16 slots, so bring your A game.
