Lance Leonard, 49, being led into the Saratoga Springs police station on March 15

Today, The Saratogian‘s Lucian McCarty penned a great article detailing the criminal record of Lance Leonard, the man who allegedly threatened a Skidmore student and caused last month’s campus-wide lockdown and multi-state police response. Leonard has a long list of felonies, violations, and convictions stretching back to the mid-1980s.

In his hometown of Cuttyhunk, Mass.—a sleepy island community a few miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard—Leonard pleaded guilty in 1985 to indecent assault and battery, a felony. He was originally charged with assault with intent to rape, burglary with intent to commit a rape, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

McCarty’s Cuttyhunk sources claimed that Leonard “followed a woman to the bed and breakfast where she was staying, broke into her room and tried to rape her, choking her in the process.” He was sentenced to three years probation and forced to enroll in alcohol and psychological treatment programs.

In 1988, Leonard was again arrested on Cuttyhunk Island and charged with two counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon. McCarty’s sources say that Leonard “fired a shotgun through a window at two women inside a house.” He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years in Dukes County Jail on one count.

Between February 2008 and May 2009, Leonard was arrested five times for “violations of sex offender registration requirements, in addition to being arrested for malicious destruction of property, failing to appear in court and criminal contempt of court. It is unclear from police records, though, whether he was convicted on any of those charges.”

Leonard is due in Saratoga Springs City Court on Friday at 9am. According to McCarty, the case “will likely be adjourned again as prosecutors prepare to present it to a grand jury, which will determine whether to indict Lance Leonard…for prosecution in county court.”

    WHAT A CATCH!
poor judgement? i would say downright shite

  3. Kalila says:

“Some girl” <– She's a real person, and a member of your community, show some damn restraint. Is there really a need for comments like these at this point?

  4. sympathy for the sympathetic says:

To those berating the girl for her lack of judgement::You don’t know her, you don’t know her situation, you don’t know Lance Leonard, and you don’t know their relationship to each other. You don’t know that they were in a consensual relationship, and if they were, the details of that relationship. So you can’t begin to judge her own judgement or intelligence. If the Skidmore community should learn from this experience, it’s to be a more open and non-judgemental place so that when people feel like they are in danger, they can get help and not feel the need to keep quiet. Luckily this girl did get help, and Lance is in jail, but for now, point your fingers at Lance not at the girl, and if you think that’s a stupid thing to say, then start pointing the fingers at yourselves.
