An anthology of short stories by Steve Stern—Skidmore creative writing professor and resident shlemiel—was released today by Graywolf Press. The collection is titled The Book of Mischief and features twenty-five years of Stern’s short stories, in addition to some new selections.
Stern is a criminally underrated writer, and his last book The Frozen Rabbi is a delightful Jewish romp, complete with Kabbalah-tinged acid trips (or vice-versa?), ghostbusting, masturbation, and pogroms. Over the summer, he lived in Vilnius, Lithuania and taught creative writing to a bunch of Americans. He later chronicled his experiences for the Forward.
So pick up his new book, unless you’re an antisemite, in which case don’t.
